Ex-NFL WR draws fan backlash for harsh Brandon Aiyuk statement

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues to draw attention around the league with his recent social media posts publicly bashing the Niners. Now, a former NFL WR delivered a blunt assessment of Aiyuk’s future in the NFL, which did not sit well with many fans.

During the recent episode of the Speak Easy podcast on June 29, former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh gave a harsh take on Aiyuk’s behavior and how his future in the league may be affected.

"He might not step foot in the NFL stadium again if he don't shut the f*** up," said Houshmandzadeh. "Like, what is he doing?"

Houshmandzadeh responded to Aiyuk's declaration of not stepping foot in the Niners stadium until October 19, when the 49ers are set for a match against the Washington Commanders.

"Adam Peters [general manager of Commanders], you sign Brandon Aiyuk, the Commanders should fire you the day you sign him," Houshmandzadeh said on the same podcast.

Aiyuk's recent video post gained a lot of attention as he called the Niners general manager, John Lynch, "creepy" for coming to his house unannounced and further said that head coach Kyle Shanahan has the temperament of a "toddler."

The standoff has been running way longer than a year, from the day Aiyuk failed to show up for the team meetings and rehab sessions for his MCL and ACL injury.

As a result, the team voided his guaranteed money ($27M), which further escalated the rift as Aiyuk cut off communication with the franchise.

His last snap with the Niners was in 2024, before he was placed on the PUP list in July 2025, and later moved to the reserve/left squad list in December 2025.

Houshmandzadeh believes that his public comments are causing more harm to his career, as he said that the league will keep moving on with or without him on the line. But the fans criticized the former wide receiver for his harsh assessment.

Fans push back against ex-WR's harsh assessment of Brandon Aiyuk

While Houshmandzadeh questioned Aiyuk's approach, many fans pushed back, believing that the wideout was explaining his perspective on the standoff with the 49ers.

One fan doubled down on Houshmandzadeh for speaking on issues that he doesn't have any information about.

"If you don't know what's going on or the details of what happened? Why give your opinion on someone's situation and someone you don't know personally?" one fan wrote.

Another fan criticized Houshmandzadeh, as he doesn't believe anything that the former NFL wideout says. "Mind your business Housh," another fan commented.

Since stepping away from football, Houshmandzadeh has served as an NFL analyst while also privately training wide receivers. Aiyuk is one of the many players he has coached.

One fan gave a mixed reaction as they believe the NFL is always on the lookout for talented players. "Talking on Instagram isn't smart, but saying he'll never play in the NFL again is a huge overreaction. If Brandon Aiyuk is healthy and producing, teams will still be interested. Talent has always mattered most in this league.

According to Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski, four teams should also be considered in the mix for Aiyuk, including Miami, Kansas City, Houston, and Indianapolis.

Another fan noted that the Commanders wouldn't sign Aiyuk as the GM of the Commanders, Adam Peters, and the Niners' GM John Lynch are still in close contact with one another.

"Adam is buddy-buddy with Lynch; he won't do it," one fan commented
