5 Cowboys players facing uncertain futures ahead of training camp

USA Today via Reuters

The Dallas Cowboys are entering training camp with many tough decisions to be made ahead. There are still many players who will be competing for their roles due to increased competition, offseason additions, and scheme changes.

Here are five Cowboys contributors, according to Mauricio Rodrigues of A to Z Sports, who could be released before the start of the 2026 NFL season, even after playing meaningful roles last year.

1. Joe Milton (Quarterback)

Milton entered the franchise with the necessary physical tools, but his way to getting rostered stays difficult. Dallas already has an established starter, and competition for the backup QB spot is intense.

According to A to Z Sports, unless Milton shows any progressive changes, the Cowboys would go in another direction.

2. Malik Davis (Running Back)

Davis has been a reliable depth option and special teams contributor, but the Cowboys have added young talent to the backfield. As the environment gets competitive for the roster spots, Davis needs to separate himself in camp or risk being a cap casualty before Week 1.

3. James Houston (Edge rusher)

Houston played 28% of the Cowboys' defensive snaps and created pressure. However, his position may be under attack due to Dallas' addition of Malachi Lawrence.

Furthermore, the franchise traded Rashan Gary, retaining Donovan Ezeiruaku and Sam Williams. With Charles Snowden also in the mix, Houston will face an uphill battle to get his spot.

4. Mariost Liufau (Linebacker/Edge rusher)

Going from an inside linebacker role to outside linebacker and edge rusher has made Liufau's situation in the Cowboys more complicated.

The LB played the second-most snaps on the team last season. However, he will have to prove himself once again as they adapt the new 3-4 scheme.

5. Reddy Steward (Cornerback)

Steward had potential in 2025 when injuries forced him into a larger role and later signed his exclusive rights tender. Now he is competing for one of the last cornerback spots. He will need a strong training camp to make the Cowboys' final roster.
