The son of former Dallas Cowboys star Marcus Spears, Marcus Spears Jr., has decided to join Texas men’s basketball and begin the next chapter of his career.

Marcus Spears Jr. has reclassified from the 2027 recruiting class to the 2026 class, allowing him to begin his college basketball career a year earlier.

“Breaking: The No. 1 player in the @sportscenternext Class of 2027, Marcus Spears Jr., is reclassifying to the Class of 2026,” ESPN posted. “Spears Jr. is also committing to the University of Texas, he told @PaulBiancardi.”

ESPN shared the announcement on Instagram (@espn) on Thursday, confirming Spears Jr.'s reclassification and commitment to Texas.

“Marcus Jr. grew up in Texas, and there’s nothing like playing for your home school and winning,” Marcus Spears said, according to Jeff Borzello and Paul Biancardi. “I experienced that growing up in Louisiana at LSU. This is his decision and his future.”

The five-star power forward has also committed to Texas men's basketball after choosing the Longhorns over offers from Arizona, Kentucky, LSU, and North Carolina.

The 17-year-old prospect is currently ranked as the No. 18 overall player and No. 2 power forward in the 2026 class, according to the Rivals industry ranking.

The Texas commit also impressed on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring, averaging 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He ranked among the top 10 players in both scoring and rebounding during the event.

Last year, Spears was part of the USA Basketball squad that won gold at the FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup. He led the team with 14 points per game during the tournament.

Spears gives Texas another talented piece as the Longhorns continue building their roster under Sean Miller, with his early arrival adding more strength to the program’s plans.

Beyond his commitment and early arrival, Spears’ skill set has also drawn attention from scouts who have closely followed his progress.

Adam Finkelstein shares insight on Spears’ game

According to CBS Sports scouting director Adam Finkelstein, Spears has shown strong athleticism, versatility, and improvement while playing an unselfish style of basketball.

“Spears is a lefty forward loaded with versatile long-term tools,” Adam wrote. “He’s mobile, runs the floor well, and has effortless athleticism…and developing floor-spacing potential as a shooter. He can put the ball on the floor a bit and is comfortable at the high post.”

Finkelstein praised Spears’ defense, highlighting his ability to move well and protect the rim, and also noted that Spears continues to improve while making an impact without needing the ball often.

“Defensively, he can already slide laterally and protect the rim,” Adam added. “He’s physically lean and may still be growing…He also plays with a high motor and the maturity to show the consistent gains he continues to make, all while playing the right way and not dominating the ball.”

Finkelstein's evaluation helps explain why Texas was eager to secure Spears early, and his accelerated arrival now gives the Longhorns another highly touted piece for Sean Miller's rebuilding project.
