Brandon Aiyuk's journey from rising star to one of the NFL's most polarizing figures has been shaped equally by his off-field actions and his on-field talent. The wide receiver, once seen as the cornerstone of the San Francisco 49ers, has now become the center of controversy.
"The San Francisco #49ers could reportedly try to recover up to $18.6 million from Brandon Aiyuk amid their ongoing contract dispute," NFL Rumors reported on X, Via NBC Sports Bay Area. "According to former NFL executive Andrew Brandt, San Francisco may have a path to pursue part of Aiyuk’s already-paid bonus money after the team placed him on the Reserve/Left Squad list."
If Aiyuk remains on the Reserve/Left Squad list instead of returning to an active roster before the payment date, the 49ers may have no responsibility to issue the option bonus.
This move can add pressure on the wide receiver to sort out the dispute before September arrives. This controversy started after Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension in 2024.
After Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and failed to attend mandatory rehab sessions, the 49ers voided $27 million in future guarantees. The team may recover $18.6 million through the grievance process.
Before the controversy, Aiyuk was San Francisco's top offensive weapon. He earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2023 and has recorded 294 receptions, 4,305 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns during his NFL career.
Surprisingly, Aiyuk has now made another bold move that could alter the trajectory of the dispute.
Brandon Aiyuk seeks NFLPA help after cutting ties with his agent
Brandon Aiyuk has formally filed paperwork to dismiss his agent, Ryan Williams, and has reached out to the NFL Players' Association. He shared an Instagram post.
"When members of the union that is in place to help players is lying/withholding information from a player on behalf of the team alongside a certified agent..that's some straight B*!!!" Aiyuk posted on Instagram via @SleeperNFL X post. "Some players have no other place to go for information or help, and are relying on the union to help them continue advancing in their careers and lives!"
He criticized both his former representative, Ryan Williams, and the union, accusing them of failing to protect his interests during the controversy with the San Francisco 49ers.
Aiyuk is looking forward to working with the Washington Commanders, but the Commanders have remained silent.
