A surprising turn of events has now seen LB Dee Winters getting traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys, and the 25-year-old couldn't be any happier.
"Honestly, I wasn't expecting it at all. I was surprised quite a bit. Everything happens for a reason. I'm excited to be back home, and I get to play for the Dallas Cowboys," said Winters, who is looking at it as a homecoming of sorts because he grew up in the state.
Born and raised in Arlington, Winters played college football at TCU, and now this trade has brought him back to his home and close to family and friends. In fact, it was at TCU where he made a name for himself, becoming one of the Big 12’s top linebackers. He's roughly worth four million currently.
"I'm not really familiar with the scheme yet, but from what I'm learning right now, it looks like I'm going to be in a lot of space, and I'm excited about that. The way that I move in open space, and when I don't have to deal with some o-linemen, football is way more fun that way. This scheme fits perfectly for me," he further adds.
And why not? Having a local lad always helps. Moreover, Dallas defensive coordinator Christian Parker already has plans to use Winters in space, leveraging his speed and tackling ability.
And even Winters is hopeful that this association with Parker will bring good results.
Winters Knows Parker’s Plan to Use Him to Exploit Space
Christian Parker had made it clear to run a 3-4 formation scheme, something that Dee Winters has less experience with, but Winters is still optimistic about the plan Parker has for him.
"He wants to get me in space. He feels like one of my assets is me being in space and being able to make tackles in space. Just run and hit with my physicality and speed that I bring to the game. Him and I both are excited to see what that looks like and go from there," said Winters.
This new formation will no doubt pose a challenge, but then there's also the possibility of playing a Mike linebacker and wearing the green dot. Quite a departure from his Will linebacker role back in San Francisco.
The switch will not be easy. If Dallas wants him to be a shotcaller on the pitch, then it will get a bit complicated. But so far, his exact role at the Cowboys camp is not yet known.
However, when you have a player who has made 101 tackles with 8 tackles for loss in the 2025 season itself with the 49ers, things can't go too wrong.
