George Pickens Creates Uncertainty Around Cowboys Minicamp Plans

The Dallas Cowboys expected their offseason to move on to mandatory minicamp from June 16-18, but one question asked to wide receiver George Pickens became the talk of the town.

Cowboys insider Nick Harris asked Pickens about his participation in the Cowboys' upcoming minicamp at Corpus Christi. However, the receiver's response raised questions.

“Pickens gave a shrug with an 'uhhhh' before a representative of his agency cut him off to say he would not be answering any more questions," wrote RJ Ochoa on Blogging the Boys.

The reaction stood out because it contradicted the confidence expressed by the Cowboys' head coach, Brian Schottenheimer. Earlier, the coach told reporters, "I expect he'll be here," stating that communication between Pickens and the team was positive, as per Reuters.

Pickens also skipped the OTAs, but missing the mandatory camp can lead to fines. The uncertainty comes from Pickens' contract situation. He signed the franchise tag of over $27 million for 2026, but the Cowboys have not committed to a long-term extension.

Last year, he recorded 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns while earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

Pickens is one of the most important pieces of Dallas' offense, but the situation with his contract and his shrug in response to the reporter's question creates uncertainty.

George Pickens' Future Faces Questions as Contract Standoff Remains

George Pickens' absence from the OTAs further fueled questions about his future with the franchise. He is set to earn more than $27 million under the franchise tag in 2026, but he has no guarantees beyond this season.

“We’ve made a decision that we’re going to have George play under the franchise tag, which won’t be a first for us,” COO Stephon Jones said at the club’s pre-draft news conference. “So there won’t be negotiations on a long-term deal.”

Jones has already made it clear that they will not negotiate a long-term extension this season. However, the decision could turn around if Pickens has another great season, according to The Landry Hat.

Mandatory minicamp is right around the corner, though, and that's where the situation becomes worth watching.

To be clear, Pickens never said he plans to miss camp. His response could end up meaning nothing at all if he shows up next week.

But when a player declines to answer a direct question about mandatory minicamp, it naturally creates some uncertainty until he's actually on the field.
