George Pickens Earns Jerry Jones Approval Despite Delay Over New Contract

Dallas Cowboys' star wide receiver George Pickens has been in the spotlight amidst his uncertain future with the franchise.
When he got drafted by the Cowboys, there were concerns regarding his behaviour in the locker room.
Now, according to Cowboys insider Todd Archer, the reports claimed that he missed team meetings and was late to the team bus before games. Due to his indiscipline, the franchise fined him multiple times. This led fans and experts to question Pickens’ future with the Cowboys.
The Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, however, laughed it off when questioned about Pickens’ punctuality. “I’ve missed a few myself…something came up,” he told the Dallas Morning News.
He further added that as long as Pickens cares about the team, his teammates, and the ultimate goal, he was willing to forgive small misdemeanors like being late to team meetings.
Dallas is considering slapping a franchise tag on their star wide receiver, the window for which opened on February 17. They now have till March 3 to make that decision.
Jones and the franchise's quarterback, Dak Prescott, are already in support of the decision.
"Whichever way they do it, he’s an important piece of this offense, and an important piece of what we’re trying to do. So, leave it to those guys, but obviously, if I need to get involved, I have said it before, I will."
According to Over the Cap, the average value for a wide receiver in 2026 would be around $28 million. On the open market, Spotrac estimates that a receiver like Pickens could receive a five-year, $153.7 million contract ($30.8 million per year on average).
Why is it crucial for the Cowboys to retain George Pickens?
Despite all the questions surrounding him, George Pickens had a breakout season with the Cowboys. In 17 games, he scored 9 touchdowns for 1429 receiving yards. This performance helped him earn a Pro Bowl selection.
The offense was one of the few good things for the Cowboys last season. It ranked 2nd in passing yards per game, with 266.3. Not only that, but the Cowboys' offense finished second in rushing yards per game, with 391.9.
Letting go of Pickens would add further misery to a team struggling to get back to its winning ways. What do you think about the whole situation? Let us know in the comments!
