Wide receiver George Pickens has finally addressed his contract situation with the Dallas Cowboys. He made it clear that his focus remains on football rather than finances.
Speaking to reporters during mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, June 16, Pickens dismissed concerns about not receiving a long-term extension from Dallas. As reported by the Cowboys reporter Jon Machota of The Athletic, Pickens said he has no plans to stay away from the team and will attend the training camp.
"What’s important to me is winning," the receiver said. "Like I said from the beginning, I always wanna bring a Super Bowl to a group of guys that never had that feeling. That’s really the most important part to me."
His statement provides clarity after an offseason filled with questions about his future. Dallas signed Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a blockbuster trade in May 2025. Now he enters the 2026 season under a one-year, $27.3 million franchise tag, as per ESPN.
The wide receiver has emerged as one of the NFL's top playmakers. Later, he revealed that his absence from OTAs was not entirely his own decision.
According to Machota, the receiver said he skipped the sessions because he was following his agent, David Mulugheta's, advice. The statement also drew attention, as Pickens personally wanted to be around the team earlier in the offseason.
That explanation also aligns with reports that there was never significant tension between Pickens and the Cowboys despite the lack of an extension.
Over his first three seasons in Pittsburgh combined, he totaled 12 touchdowns and 2,841 yards. Last year with Dallas, he recorded 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns.
His availability gives Dak Prescott another major weapon alongside CeeDee Lamb as the Cowboys look to make a deep postseason run.
Brian Schottenheimer's Reaction on George Pickens' Return
Last year, Pickens played well alongside Lamb. His strong season eased earlier concerns about his maturity raised by Mike Tomlin. Now, he may need another big year.
Pickens saw limited action during practice, according to Brian Schottenheimer. However, the head coach still believed Pickens won’t need an extended adjustment period heading into late-July training camp. However, now that Pickens returned, the head coach addressed the situation.
"Really great visits with George," he said. "Fired up to have him back, he's fired up to be here. He'll do all the mock, he'll do all the individual, and we'll just keep him out of team, just let him watch. He'll be coach Pickens today during the team period."
Although heading into his fifth NFL season, Pickens is still 25 and said he’ll be present when training camp opens. Dallas could franchise tag him again next year, at a cost of $33.6 million.
