New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo found himself under scrutiny after a failed backflip at Fanatics Fest sparked criticism away from the football field. The awkward landing quickly drew attention, with one former NFL player questioning the young running back's judgment.

According to former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho, Skattebo's decision was more than an embarrassing moment. Speaking on the Speakeasy podcast, Acho said the Giants running back needs to show greater maturity, especially after recovering from a major injury less than a year ago.

" I can't now, baby, you like a little kid," said Acho, "So for me, I didn't like seeing it cuz it's just. immature. And yes, you're a kid, but we paying you like a grown folk, bro. So, like, I need you to carry yourself more grown."

Acho's criticism on the Speakeasy podcast (YouTube) wasn't just about a failed backflip. The former NFL linebacker questioned Skattebo's decision-making, arguing that a player expected to be a key part of the Giants' offense can't afford unnecessary risks away from football.

His co-host, former NFL running back LeSean "Shady" McCoy, agreed that the incident was concerning but offered a more measured perspective.

"I think it's an interesting situation because, one, I hate to see my future franchise running back go out there and do that after injuring himself, but also it's a case-by-case type situation," McCoy said.

Acho also pointed to Skattebo's previous comments and behavior as examples of the maturity he believes the young running back still needs to develop.

New York Giants are relying on Skattebo's skills this year after his promising display in his rookie season in 2025. The same season in which the season-ending ankle injury cut his run short.

Acho wasn't the only person who reacted to Skattebo's failed backflip. Giants head coach John Harbaugh also weighed in, although his message came with a lighter tone.

Cam Skattebo probably will never try to do a backflip again. Especially after how the reactions have been since he failed to stick that landing.

This time around, his coach, John Harbaugh, chimed in with his perspective on the matter.

“Dude, at least stick it. You know what I mean?” Harbaugh joked on Tuesday's Bleav in Giants via ESPN. “Land the thing if you're gonna do it.”

While Acho viewed the incident as a question of maturity, Harbaugh chose humor instead of criticism before shifting the focus back to Skattebo's recovery and preparation for the season.

Since then, Skattebo has made tremendous progress. As per ESPN sources, he even returned to practice in the spring. Even head coach Harbaugh is confident that Skattebo is ready for training camp in August.

"[Skattebo] is gonna be ready to go," Harbaugh said. "He's been working super hard; he's really been training like crazy. And his mind is on camp. You know he's healthy, he's ready to roll, and I can't wait to see him out there at practice."

Skattebo appears on track for training camp, but the failed backflip has already become a lesson in balancing personality with professionalism.

As Acho made clear, the Giants need their young running back making headlines for his play on the field rather than unnecessary risks away from it.
