After watching the New York Knicks end a championship drought that lasted more than five decades, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin made a bold prediction. To him, the Cowboys could finally end their own three-decade-long wait for another Super Bowl title.
“Now that the NBA season is over and the New York Knicks have gotten rid of the 53-year CHAMPIONSHIP drought !!!,” Irvin wrote on X on June 21. “We must turn our attention towards NFL Football and see if the Dallas Cowboys can now erase a 30-year CHAMPIONSHIP drought and get on top of the leaderboard just like “THE PLAYMAKER”!!!!!! You know I am ALL IN!!!!”
The Cowboys haven't reached the playoffs since 2023 and haven't won a Super Bowl since the 1995 NFL season (Super Bowl XXX). The team finished last season with a disappointing 7-9-1 record, largely due to poor defensive play.
Despite ranking No. 2 in total offense in the league and passing yards (266.3), with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens leading the unit, the defense ranked near the bottom of the league (No. 30).
The team allowed an average of 30.1 points per game (511 total points) across 17 games, the second- most points allowed in franchise history since 1960 (30.8 points per game).
To fix the gaps on the defense, the Cowboys added several key pieces to the roster to fit new defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s 3-4 scheme.
"New defensive coordinator Christian Parker is stepping into a pivotal role, while additions such as Caleb Downs, Jaishawn Barham, and Rashan Gary have raised expectations for improvement," per Sam of Marca.com.
The Cowboys added former Green Bay Packers pass rusher Rashan Gary to bring veteran experience to the defense. They spent five of their seven picks of the 2026 NFL Draft on defensive picks, headlined by drafting Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence in the first round.
Meanwhile, positive updates are coming up from the Dallas camp.
Brian Schottenheimer encouraged by Dallas Cowboys defense during OTAs
According to Tommy Yarrish of Dallas Cowboys.com, head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that Parker has his own way of boosting the competitive spirit of the team.
"I believe defense wins championships," Schottenheimer said, per Yarrish. "I do believe that. And so if the defense is giving up headaches, that's fine by me."
He boasted confidence in the changes made during the offseason in the defensive unit, which he believes would eventually lead them to the Super Bowl.
"We feel like we're preparing the right way, we feel like we've made the changes that we've needed to make to fix the defensive side of the ball," the head coach said. "But I think the real preparation starts when we get out to Oxnard."
With 23 new defensive additions coming via trades, the draft, and free agency, the Cowboys’ defense looks different this year. Parker has worked on getting everyone communicating, and the players are more aware of what’s happening on each snap.
Will it be enough to break the three-decade drought? Let us know in the comments.
