"It's scary": NFL insider shares troubling Brandon Aiyuk take

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s future continues to be on the radar as his social media posts have drawn attention from the fans and the league. One NFL Insider warned that his social media activity may cause him more harm. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is giving his take on the situation.

“I think every time he opens his mouth, he damages his standing with other teams, and he scares other teams from bringing him into their organization,” Schefter said, per X post of JPA on June 24. “In speaking with teams, everybody's saying, 'What's wrong with this guy right now?' It's unsettling to watch him, and it's scary to see how he's handling himself.”

Aiyuk had expressed his dissatisfaction with the 49ers on multiple occasions through a series of Instagram videos posted in the past few weeks.

In one such video, Aiyuk publicly called the 49ers 'little boys' and 'stupid for paying him'. He said that the franchise was afraid to let him go, as they would regret their decision if he landed a better team.

Aiyuk recently posted a video on Instagram story on Father's Day (on June 21) showing his support for the Washington Commanders, while he is still signed with the 49ers.

"Go, Commanders!" Aiyuk said on an Instagram story posted on June 22, "Go Commanders! Go commanders! Raise Hail! Take Command!"

The 49ers-Aiyuk standoff has been an ongoing situation for nearly a year, since the wideout failed to meet his contract obligations.

The internal discipline escalated significantly behind the scenes after the front office officially removed him from standard injured reserve and shifted him to the 'reserve/left team' list when he completely stopped showing up for team activities.

He missed team meetings and rehab sessions for the torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus injuries sustained in his right knee in July 2024.

That resulted in the team voiding his remaining guaranteed money, which comes to around $27M, which includes $24.935M in an option bonus and $1.215M in base salary.

His last campaign with the 49ers was in 2024, where he posted 25 receptions for 374 yards in 7 games before being placed on the PUP list and later the injured/reserve list in December 2024.

Though Aiyuk has expressed interest in joining the Commanders, Schefter believes his social media activity is ruining his chances with potential trade suitors.

49ers close the door on a potential reunion

During the team's annual end-of-season press conference on January 21, 2026, the 49ers general manager, John Lynch, shared his stance on Aiyuk's 2026 appearance for the Niners.

"I think it's safe to say that he has played his last snap with the Niners," Lynch said, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN. "It's unfortunate, a situation that just went awry. And I think that this was a case where that happened."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was also on the same page with Lynch as he expressed disappointment in encountering a situation, which he has 'never seen in his 22 years of coaching, where a player cut off communication with the franchise.

The Niners appear to be fully committed to moving on from Aiyuk, yet they have yet to decide whether to trade him or let him go in free agency, considering his present social media activity.
