Jerry Jones Adds To Defensive Depth With Free Agency Re-Signing

The Dallas Cowboys have officially re-signed defensive back, keeping the veteran corner on their roster after he joined the team late last season.

Prior to this deal, Ballentine had a turbulent year, briefly signing with the Colts, Packers, and Patriots before being released by each.

Corey Ballentine was signed late last season by the Cowboys, where he went on to feature in five games, playing a variety of positions. This year, after becoming a free agent earlier in March, the Cowboys made a decision early to bring him back on.

Throughout his career, the 19-year-old has produced 103 total tackles with just two of those for Dallas.

Arguably, his best season came a few years ago in 2023 when he had 43 tackles for the Packers alongside his one career interception.

While the player doesn't quite come with the same reputation as perhaps Maxx Crosby or some other defensive talent, it does add depth to a defense that needs work.

After losing over a dozen players on defense in the last 12 months, Dallas has been active in Jerry Jones' aggressive approach to the 2026 offseason. But no matter what, one name keeps popping back up: Maxx Crosby.

Could Maxx Crosby Still Come to Dallas?

Jerry Jones recently admitted the franchise has failed to meet fan expectations, citing the 30-year absence from the Super Bowl.

He pledged an aggressive approach to rebuilding the defense through free agency and the 2026 draft. Since then, the franchise was involved in a trade for Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby, until the Baltimore Ravens swooped in.

Now, after that agreement collapse, owing to an unfavorable medical, the Cowboys could be back in the mix, and Jerry Jones hasn't ruled out a trade.

"We're pretty far down the road relative to what our plans are," Jones said Thursday when asked about Crosby at an event promoting an IndyCar series street race that will run by the 80,000-seat home of the Cowboys in Arlington. "So while I don't anticipate it, I don't want to rule anything out."

Jones's frustration with last year's performance has fueled his focus on the defense, leading to the re-signing of Ballentine and a search for more.

Adding a star like Crosby would be a significant boost for Dallas, especially after losing Micah Parsons a year ago.
