Questions are growing inside the Dallas Cowboys after owner Jerry Jones appeared to shift blame for the team’s draft struggles onto the CEO.
Speaking on Fox with Steve Doocy, Jerry Jones addressed the questions regarding the Dallas Cowboys' drafting. Being upfront with his words, Jones blames the CEO, Stephen Jones, his eldest son, for the drafting mistakes.
“As a matter of fact, Stephen, my oldest son, drafts all the bad players, and I have to step in and draft all the good ones. And so that’s the way it works around there," said Jerry Jones.
“So, having said that … we’ve got to have this journey, and it’s had bumps, and it’s had knots on your head, then I’ve got to live those down-times, up-times with the family. That’s been the best part of the whole show,” he added.
The remark appeared to be light-hearted banter about the team’s draft history, but it quickly circulated on social media, with fans debating whether Jones was joking or reflecting on the team’s draft history.
The Cowboys have faced criticism for several draft decisions over the past decade, producing mixed results. Some early selections of the athletes have failed to develop into long-term stay in the Cowboys’ roster.
The Dallas Cowboys have also signed elite athletes. Linebacker Micah Parsons was drafted in the first round in 2021. He quickly became the centerpiece of Dallas’ defense. Well, until another decision, which went against the fans' sentiments, when they let him go to the Green Bay Packers.
On offense, the Cowboys drafted WR CeeDee Lamb in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft from the Oklahoma Sooners football team. Lamb has since emerged as the team’s top receiver and a consistent Pro Bowl performer.
Inside the Cowboys Draft Room as Jerry Jones Addresses Past Misses
Owner Jerry Jones and the front office have overseen both outcomes as the team continues to build through the draft.
One of the most criticized picks remains DE Taco Charlton. Taco was selected in the first round of the 2017 draft from the Michigan Wolverines.
Dallas expected him to strengthen the pass rush, but he recorded only four sacks in two seasons before being released.
The decision drew more scrutiny because the Cowboys passed on edge rusher T. J. Watt from the Wisconsin Badgers football, who later became the Defensive Player of the Year with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Another miss came in 2019 when Dallas drafted defensive tackle Trysten Hill in the second round from the UCF Knights football. Hill struggled with injuries and inconsistent play and never secured a steady role on the defensive line.
