With NFL teams jostling for picks at the NFL draft, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have received a boost, as the Cowboys have officially been awarded two compensatory picks.
They now have eight draft picks to choose from after acquiring the 177th and 180Th overall pick. DeMarcus Lawrence, Rico Dowdle, Chauncey Golston, Chuma Edoga, and Brandin Cooks were free agents that the Cowboys lost out on.
They also got compensatory free agents in the form of Javonte Williams, Robert Jones, Dante Fowler, and Solomon Thomas.
The NFL typically hands out compensatory picks to 15 teams based on a formula for any free agents lost. This includes playing time, salary, and any awards in the postseason.
The compensatory picks have been a staple in the NFL since 1994, and the Cowboys have received the second-highest in NFL history with 60. The Baltimore Ravens lead the list with 64 compensatory picks in their history.
Interestingly, Dak Prescott, the star quarterback, was acquired by the Cowboys in a compensatory pick.
The Dallas Cowboys acquire Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers
In a reverse Micah Parsons move, the Cowboys have now acquired pass rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. Adam Schefter from ESPN stated that the Cowboys got Gary in exchange for a 2027 late-round pick.
Although this move is aimed at strengthening the defense, it makes it more difficult for the Cowboys to pursue pass rusher Trey Hendrickson.
Gary, who was drafted by the Packers in 2019, signed a $96 millon four year contract extension. The move is expected to free up around $11 million in cap space for the Packers.
He had previously spent 7 seasons with the Packers, playing 106 games. He recorded 271 combined tackles, 46.5 sacks, and seven forced fumbles in his stint.
This is the second time that the Cowboys have done business with the Packers in the past year. They got two first-round draft picks and Kenny Clark in exchange for Micah Parsons a week before the start of the previous season.
