Jerry Jones hints Cowboys could sacrifice future for blockbuster trade

The Dallas Cowboys may not be finished reshaping their roster before the 2026 season. Owner Jerry Jones said he would be willing to sacrifice future assets if it meant landing the right "splash player" to strengthen a team he believes can contend for a Super Bowl.

"Candidly, I'd be very interested. I'd give up on the future to add to where we are today as to a player," Jones shared in the Cowboys' training camp press conference on July 28.

ESPN's Todd Archer added that Jones revealed he had spoken with another NFL owner the day before, reinforcing his openness to making another major move if the right opportunity presents itself.

ESPN's Lindsay Thiry reported that Jones pointed to the Los Angeles Rams' aggressive roster-building approach as one he admires, citing it as an example of the kind of bold moves that can keep a championship window open.

While the comments made at the Cowboys training camp press conference (YouTube) grabbed attention, they also fit the Cowboys' approach to roster building.

Last year, they traded DL Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for DT Kenny Clark and two first-round picks.

This offseason, they acquired Quinnen Williams (DT) from the New York Jets, a move that proved significant.

Jones' comments also renewed attention on Dallas' previous pursuit of Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby. The Cowboys had been involved before Crosby was nearly traded to the Baltimore Ravens, and Jones said the organization never lost interest despite that deal falling through after a failed physical.

However, he declined to discuss the situation further, noting that Crosby remains under contract with Las Vegas.

Jerry Jones also remains focused on keeping Cowboys' core together

Along with exploring ways to improve the roster, Dallas has also prioritized retaining key contributors. The Cowboys re-signed running back Javonte Williams this offseason and have already begun discussing a long-term future with defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones confirmed that discussions with Quinnen Williams' representatives have already taken place at the same press conference.

“Absolutely. We’re very open to that,” Steven Jones said of a potential extension. “We want Quinnen here for the long haul.”

Williams proved himself by the numbers too, with over 61 total tackles, 23 quarterback hits, and Second-Team All-Pro honors, justifying his valued position in the team.

Williams remains under contract through the 2027 season, giving Dallas flexibility in its negotiations. Even so, with the market for elite defensive tackles continuing to climb, securing a long-term agreement sooner rather than later could benefit both sides.
