Jerry Jones Issues Surprising Admission on Nickel CB Jourdan Lewis Decision

The Dallas Cowboys' owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, admitted that not re-signing nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis last year was a mistake

Jerry Jones invited reporters onto his luxury bus in Indianapolis, where the NFL combine is currently taking place. While ‌a lot was discussed, some of it was about Jourdan Lewis.

Jones said, “He wouldn’t get out this year.” The cornerback would have helped in what someone would say is the worst defense the NFL has seen in years. “Man, that’s how you learn, right there.”

The Michigan native played college football for the Michigan Wolverines and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round as the 92nd overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The nickel CB stayed with the Cowboys until last year before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Lewis' career-high three interceptions came within the 2021 season while he was still with the Cowboys, and he has a total of 12 interceptions in his career. Lewis also had four sacks in the 2019 season with the Cowboys, and that marks a career high in that statistic as well, with a total of 9.5 sacks in his career.

At the end of the 2024 NFL season, Dallas did not re-sign the veteran nickel CB. Lewis subsequently signed for the Jaguars ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

What else was discussed on the luxury bus with Jerry Jones?

Jones discussed the franchise tag decision on George Pickens, saying he had a positive conversation with the wide receiver about the tag, and Pickens will be an integral part of the franchise’s future.

He also addressed the Brandon Aubrey situation, saying that he wants to make him the highest-paid player for that position in the NFL, and an offer is on the table that reflects that.

Jones also confirmed that they will be aggressive in free agency, but the priority will be on the defensive side of the field, and they will “bust the budget.” Jones also acknowledged that fixing the defense is a colossal task.

After re-signing Javonte Williams to a new three-year deal, Jones called him the “top two or three” offensive players from 2025.

Jones also got emotional when talking about his desire to get one last Super Bowl. “Nothing has as big a prize to me,” said Jones.
