Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has made a clear statement about George Pickens’ future and ongoing trade speculation during his recent appearance at the NFL Owners’ Meeting in Arizona.
Jerry Jones responded to questions about a potential George Pickens deal and his long-term future, noting the July 15 deadline to finalize contracts for franchise-tagged players.
According to insider Jon Machota, Jones revealed that there hasn't been any communication with Pickens in light of his contract, and that he is not sure whether the WR will join the team in the offseason. The longer the Dallas Cowboys delay finalizing an agreement on the franchise-tagged player, the more suspicion surrounds this situation.
"Franchise tag is an integral part of all teams, but certainly in a little part of our strategy over the next two or three years as we look at how to keep the best players we have," Jones added.
The Cowboys are yet to make the most of the jackpot deal they got on the WR last year, who they traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickens had a brilliant season in Dallas in 2025, which makes him a priority.
That being said, George Pickens is seeking a long-term contract, and with the franchise tag in place, it’s unlikely he will participate in the offseason training program, as is common with franchise-tagged players.
ESPN's Adam Schefter offered an update, saying Pickens won’t be at the facility without a contract and isn’t expected to sign the franchise tag soon, with talks likely extending to the July 15 deadline.
It will be tricky for Dallas to keep George Pickens, because his market value is already high. Part of the surge is also because of Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s recent contract increase with the Seattle Seahawks, and Pickens ranked just behind Smith-Njigba in performance.
There is, however, a good chance that Pickens will eventually suit up for Detroit later in the season.
Jerry Jones optimistic about George Pickens despite backlash around delay
Fans eagerly want to see the star WR practice with Detroit. But as Schefter said, that won't happen unless Pickens and the Lions come to an agreement. But Jones is still keen on having the WR in the franchise's future.
"Make no mistake about it, we have long-term plans in mind," the Cowboys owner said about Pickens. He also said that the WR has already been training with quarterback Dak Prescott.
A reason behind there being so much debate on the franchise's stance on Pickens is that they have done this before. Star WR CeeDee Lamb was only able to sign his 2024 extension in August that year, which was already his fifth-year option as warranted by his rookie deal. Lamb is now earning $34 million per season, as part of his new, four-year deal.
Maybe the Cowboys are set to take a similar path with George Pickens, who will have to play on tag if a contract is not signed before the July date. Dallas also has an option of tagging Pickens in 2027 to keep him from entering free agency, but it might not sit well with a WR of his caliber.
What do you think will become of this situation in Dallas? Let us know in the comments.
