Many wondered how Jerry Jones viewed his star receiver's place in Dallas. The team chose not to sign George Pickens to a long-term deal before the deadline, leaving his future in question. 

Pickens will play the 2026 NFL season on a one-year, guaranteed $27.298 million franchise tag after Dallas and the wideout failed to agree on a multi-year extension before July 15. Jones delivered a public vote of confidence when reporters gathered in Oxnard for the start of training camp.

“I hope that he comes out here and is the most prolific, successful receiver in the NFL this year,” Jones said, via NFL reporter Jon Machota. “And how would you like to be a free agent and, with his credentials and step out there and have a year like that? I wish all of that because if that happens, that (would be) good for us.”

Jones shared those remarks during his July 28 press conference as players arrived in California. A report published July 29 by Yagya Bhargava of Athlon Sports highlighted those comments from Jones. 

Instead of treating the tag as a temporary fix, he framed the upcoming year as an opportunity for both sides. A good performance from Pickens would lift the Cowboys on the field while raising the receiver's market value.

“This can be a very win-win thing that we’ve done here, us and George being on the team. Make no mistake about it, George could be a Cowboy for the rest of his career, and that’d be a long time,” Jones added. 

Dallas still views Pickens as a core piece for years to come. Rather than handing out a deal right away, the front office wanted additional evaluation time and cap flexibility.

Managing top-tier contracts for quarterback Dak Prescott and fellow star receiver CeeDee Lamb made financial patience essential. 

After placing the tag in late February, the team decided in April not to enter long-term contract negotiations. They wanted to see another full year before committing. 

With contract details set for the year, the conversation in Dallas has shifted from business to football. Pickens enters 2026 with momentum following a brilliant first year with the team.

Pickens first arrived in Dallas on May 7, 2025, when the Cowboys acquired him from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade. Dallas gave up a 2026 third-round draft pick, a 2027 fifth-round pick, and a 2027 sixth-round pick in return. 

During his career-best 2025 campaign, Pickens hauled in 93 receptions on 131 targets for 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He finished third in the entire NFL in receiving yards. He also earned second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

If Pickens repeats his 2025 form, Jones will face pressure to lock him long-term before free agency.

Early signs from the 2026 training camp indicate that momentum is carrying right into the coming season. According to Sports Illustrated, head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised Pickens' focus in team meetings and noted he has been as dialed in as ever. 

Pickens made it clear that his focus is on football while leaving contract negotiations to his agent. He stated that his top priority is helping bring a Super Bowl to Dallas.

Because NFL rules prevent tagged players from signing long-term deals during the season, any contract talks must wait until early 2027. If no new agreement is reached before March, Pickens will hit unrestricted free agency. 

Applying a second franchise tag in 2027 would cost Dallas well over $32 million. The contract situation will take care of itself in due time.
