Jerry Jones Makes Major Admission on Brandon Aubrey as Cowboys Eye Long-Term Deal

The Dallas Cowboys' owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, has come to terms with a Brandon Aubrey reality. The team hasn't been able to sign him to a new contract.

Jones said, “We want to make him the highest-paid player. We think he’s outstanding. Love his story, love the fact that the story is with the Cowboys.”

He has been one of the NFL's most accurate kickers in recent years. During his time with the Cowboys, the kicker was named a Pro Bowler twice.

While there is an offer on the table for Aubrey, the two sides are still not close to an agreement. Harrison Butker holds the current benchmark for the highest salary for a kicker, with an annual average salary of $6.4 million.

As per rumors, Aubrey was offered an average salary of ‌$7.5 million, but his agent is seeking a number close to $10 million. However, Aubrey did mention that these reports are not true.

There is also another angle to this story. Aubrey is currently a restricted free agent. The Cowboys are set to put a second-round tender on the kicker.

If some other franchise tries to sway the kicker away from Dallas by giving him what he wants, that franchise may need to give Dallas a second-round draft pick as compensation.

Aubrey would still have an option to sign with the Cowboys for one year and would get a salary of $5.8 million. The Cowboys would miss out on his services if they lost him in free agency to another franchise.

What are some of the other teams that could use Brandon Aubrey?

The Philadelphia Eagles would gladly welcome the services of Brandon Aubrey. Their kicker, Jake Elliot, who had a good start to the season, had a drop in performance as the league progressed.

Elliot’s field goal percentage now sits at almost 71%. Elliot is in year one of a four-year deal, but the Eagles could move away from Elliot.

The San Francisco 49ers are another team that could use the services of Aubrey. The 49ers have struggled to find a consistent kicker. They cut Jake Moody after the first game of the season and subsequently signed Eddy Pineiro.

While Pineiro was good on his field goals, he struggled to convert extra points. Pineiro had a field goal percentage of almost 97%, but when it comes to extra points, that number is down to 89%.

While Aubrey is certain to play in the NFL next season, his team remains the biggest question.
