Jerry Jones Opens Up on Cowboys DC's Defensive Approach

Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones has high hopes for their new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, for the 2026 season. He has been reportedly 'impressed' with Parker's defensive changes.

NFL insider Jon Machota reported that one of Jerry Jones' goals for this year’s draft process was to learn from Christian Parker about the team’s defense. Jones praised Parker’s ability to teach the changes on April 26.

"He's very impressive like that. And if he can do it to me, then he'll be a whiz doing it to those players and their minds and their execution out there," Jones stated.

During his post-draft conference on Day 3, Jones responded how Parker helped shape the draft board with defensive talents and helped him understand the changes and their importance.

"I was going to know more about what we're trying to do out there this year. Not necessarily feel better, but know more,"Jones said.

"Christian was one of the better teachers for me. A very articulate guy, turning the light on for me on some of the things he wanted to do", Jones stated.

HC Brian Schottenheimer quipped on how ‘cool’ it was to see both the owner Jerry Jones and COO Stephen Jones learn about ‘what gap-and-a-half means, and stack, and fall back’, highlighting how Parker’s defensive approach has made key changes in the NFL draft.

The Cowboys have been working hard to fix their defensive roster, replacing their former defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, with former Philadelphia Eagles' DB coach, Christian Parker.

The defensive gaps cost the Cowboys a 7-9-1 record in the 2025 season, which saw them miss the playoffs for a second straight year and marked three decades since their last Super Bowl win.

Jerry Jones Owns Up to Cowboys’ Costly Miss

During the Cowboys’ post-draft conference on Day 2, Jerry Jones admitted his mistake of ruining the playoff chances by not paying attention to the alarming defense.

According to reports from Machota, Jones highlighted the problems in their defensive team for the past five years.

“We’ve changed this defense. …This is a product of 3, 4, 5 years of not getting where we’re trying to go and being a contender.… We’re doing something about (fixing) this defense,” Jones stated.

The Dallas Cowboys surrendered 1,193 total yards and 92 points in just the first three games and allowed 6,409 yards overall in the 2025 season. This poor defense marked the second-worst three-game start in franchise history in yardage allowed.

According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Parker was brought in this offseason to fix Matt Eberflus’ defense, which struggled across the board, conceding a franchise-record 511 points.

As soon as Christian Parker joined the Cowboys, he shifted the defense from 4-3 to 3-4, and the team needed players to back it up.

Accordingly, the Cowboys have prioritized filling those defensive gaps by selecting four defensive prospects, a focus that was evident throughout the 2026 NFL Draft.
