It has been a few days into free agency, and Jerry Jones already thinks the Dallas Cowboys have sorted out their defensive woes.
Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager of the Cowboys, was in attendance at the Grand Prix of Arlington. At the pre-race show, he spoke about the Cowboys' defensive game plan.
"Well, I’ll tell you I believe we’ve done one thing. We’re figuring out how to stop them. We can't do anything but go up there. But that's where we're addressing, that’s where we’re putting our energy and our money. ”
Jones is referring to stopping the opposition offense. The Cowboys had an abysmal 2025 record, and one of the major contributing factors was their defense.
The Dallas Cowboys missed the playoffs for the second straight year, finishing with a 7-9-1 record. Their defense was the worst the NFL has ever seen, not something Jerry Jones and America’s team wants to be associated with.
The defensive statistics are bizarre as they come. Cowboys' defense allowed an NFL-high 511 points, averaging almost 31 points a game. The team ranked plum last in 32nd place.
Their red-zone defense was also horrible, ranked 29th in the league with a 67.7% defense red zone TD rate. In third-down defense, the Cowboys finished last yet again in 32nd place.
For the total defense, the Cowboys finished 30th and allowed 59 touchdowns.
How Has Jerry Jones and the Front Office Tackled This Issue?
The Cowboys have been busy making moves in free agency, although there has been no blockbuster move yet, they have been steady with their decision-making.
Dallas acquired Rashan Gary via a trade from the Green Bay Packers. An edge rusher who’s been in the league for seven years will add stability to the defense.
In a recent interview with ESPN, Gary was optimistic about making a strong impact on his new team's performance.
"In terms of the run, I'm one of the best in the league. I feel like anything that I need to do in terms of setting the edge, knocking things back, trying to keep things under control, being able to two-gap, just being able to be the anchor that I am, that's what I'm going to bring, just being as effective as I can be."
The Cowboys signed safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year deal. A multi-faceted player will be an important addition to the secondary room.
Jones' office also agreed terms with former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Cobie Durant on a one-year deal and also signed P.J. Locke to a one-year deal. Both of them will bring their experience to the Dallas defense.
There is still work to be done, and the linebacker situation needs to be addressed. With the NFL Draft not far away, the Cowboys hold two first-round picks (12 and 20), which will most likely translate into defensive needs.
