Jerry Jones is optimistic about the Dallas Cowboys’ chances in the upcoming season. And to substantiate this, he referenced Super Bowl LX’s winners, the Seattle Seahawks.
Jerry Jones was seen speaking to reporters at TMZ’s Fanatics Event. He optimistically remarked, “First of all, start with this Super Bowl. I would look at these teams. Look at New England. Look at Seattle,” he said.
“They’re made up for the team, first-year quarterbacks for the team, the system. The coaches are fresh on the scene. So, the point is, on this day in the NFL, you can go from a pumpkin to a carrot, so to speak. And you can do it in a year, or you can do it in two years.”
And Jerry Jones does have a point.
The Seahawks coach, Mike MacDonald, 36, was hired in 2024 and was coaching his second season with the Seahawks. Their veteran quarterback, Sam Darnold, was playing his first season with the Seahawks.
Not to mention, Drake Maye, 23, the New England Patriots’ quarterback, was only in his second NFL season.
“That is very promising to me. I’ve been there. I understand how it’s done. I understand how it’s not done,” he said.
However, there is a question about whether Jones knows how it’s done. The Cowboys unceremoniously let go of Micah Parsons, a vital cog in their defense, and are now facing a George Pickens dilemma with his contract. These are not good signs for a franchise that is looking to get back to its winning ways.
Is a defensive overhaul the need of the hour?
Jones also touched upon the changes the franchise is making in the defensive line, as that was a key area of concern for them last season.
“We’re redoing our defense, and I’ve changed so much about the approach that we’re going to have with coaching the defense. So, kind of when you work for yourself, as I do, you have to change what’s in the mirror, so to speak.”
Jerry Jones seems more open to going away from his usual methods of hiring. He hired a new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, a decision he said he was not hands-on with. Is this change of mindset going to be enough? Only time will tell.
But one thing is for sure: the Cowboys cannot afford to let go of their best players if they hope to get closer to the Super Bowl.
