Amid speculation about Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens' franchise tag status and long-term future, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones delivered a bold statement that appears to have put all trade rumors to rest.
During the training camp press conference on July 28, Jones said the franchise tag ($27.3M) is more of a business move that helps both sides and teased that Pickens could be a Cowboy until his retirement.
"This can be a very win-win thing that we've done here, us and George being on the team,” Jones said, per X post of The Athletic's Jon Machota on July 28. “Make no mistake about it, George could be a Cowboy for the rest of his career, and that'd be a long time. Make no mistake about it. This (franchise tag) just fit for us, and thank goodness it fit for him, and we got it done."

According to Jon Machota's X post, Jones praised Pickens as a key part of the team's "potential success" and valued his chemistry with the offensive unit, noting his overall positive impact.
“I hope that he comes out here and is the most prolific, successful receiver in the NFL this year," Jones said, per Jon Machota's X post. "And how would you like to be a free agent and with his credentials and step out there and have a year like that? I wish all of that because if that happens, that (would be) good for us.”
Jones expects Pickens to build on his breakout 2025 season, as the Cowboys still view the Pro Bowler as a cornerstone in the team's plans.
Pickens posted 93 receptions for 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last year, earning Second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2025.
But the Cowboys executives have remained firm in their stance against trading for Pickens or offering a long-term extension, leading to speculation that the wideout may hold out during the offseason.
However, Pickens attended the mandatory minicamp and training camp on July 28 without any hold-in for a contract extension, entering the 2026 season with a "football first" mindset.
Jones' public endorsement also drew a response from Pickens, who later addressed the owner's remarks.

When asked about Jones' comments during training camp, Pickens welcomed the owner's vote of confidence and expressed his excitement about being part of the Cowboys.
"Super excited," Pickens said, per another X post shared by Machota on July 30. "I'm always super happy when someone thinks highly of me, so shoutout to Jerry."
Pickens further revealed that he had been preparing for the 2026 season since "the end of last season", without giving too much attention to his contract situation.
"I left it up to agents, so I was, even when we were nine, ten months from training camp, I was already thinking about ball, I was already training," Pickens said, per DallasCowboys.com.
With training camp underway, Pickens' focus appears to be exactly where the Cowboys want it: on making plays and helping the team reach Super Bowl contention.
