Justin Simmons Makes Bold Statement on New Cowboys DC Christian Parker

The Dallas Cowboys added defensive coordinator Christian Parker as part of their defensive overhaul post a disappointing 2025 season. Former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons recently offered a strong endorsement for Parker, considering their history together at the Broncos.

Simmons praised Parker for bringing key changes to the secondary for whatever teams he works on, and claims that ‘he is one of the best coaches he has worked with.’

“Denver, even though we were winning games, our secondary play would have been up there,  was some of the best,” Simmons said, per X post of Jordan Schultz. “And then he goes to Philly; they win a Super Bowl; their secondary play is up there for one of the best, right? And now he has a chance to be a DC. Dallas should be excited, man. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve had.”

Simmons' praise carried a particular weight, as during their time in the Broncos, Parker helped develop one of the league's top secondaries.

Christian Parker served as the Broncos’ defensive backs coach from 2021 to 2023, playing a key role in developing players like CB Patrick Surtain II and S Justin Simmons.

Simmons earned second-team All-Pro honors while Patrick Surtain II earned his first Pro Bowl and first-team AP All-Pro selection under Parker's guidance.

He also led the Broncos to 15 interceptions in 2022, the highest mark during his tenure in Denver, according to Tommy Yarrish of Dallas Cowboys.com.

Parker was hired by the Eagles to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 season, having a reunion with DC Vic Fangio. He joined as the passing game coordinator and the defensive backs coach in 2024.

His influence was significant as the team landed their Super Bowl win, with the team ranking No. 1 in overall defense in the league for the 2024 season.

Last season, Dallas finished with a record of 7-9-1, and its defense ranked 30th. Thus, Parker was hired to revamp and lead the Cowboys' defense after a historically bad defense last season.

What Christian Parker Brings to the Cowboys' Defense

Christian Parker's defensive schemes often focus on versatility, where he dedicates time to prepare individualized instruction based on each player's ability.

"The first thing is we're going to be multiple," Parker said, via the team’s official website in February. "I think that whenever you form a defensive structure, it's about the players that you have. So our core principles, we'll be a 3-4 by nature."

His current coverage schemes 'blend man-to-man principles with zone disguises', heavily influenced by his experiences with mentors Mike Pettine and Vic Fangio.

He was heavily involved in the draft process, reportedly identifying edge Malachi Lawrence and safety Caleb Downs as two of his preferred first-round targets in 2026.

While Parker has been focusing on the Cowboys' defensive identity, the pressure is on him to deliver this season.
