Knicks NBA Finals Victory Leaves a Dent In Dallas Cowboys History

The New York Knicks ended a 53-year championship drought on Saturday night, wrapping up the NBA Finals with a 4-1 series victory over the San Antonio Spurs, casting renewed attention on the Dallas Cowboys’ drought.

Randy Gurzi of Sports Illustrated said that every time a franchise ends its championship drought, the Cowboys are reminded of their 31-year drought, which gets harder to ignore with each passing season.

“Ending the 53-year drought was very impressive, which is something the Dallas Cowboys hope to accomplish in the near future,” per Randy Gurzi of Sports Illustrated. “As fans know (since we're all constantly being reminded), the Cowboys have not won a title of their own since the 1995 season, meaning they're going on 31 years.”

The Knicks last won their title in 1973, with the 2026 win marking their third championship in franchise history. The Cowboys last lifted the Lombardi Trophy in the 1995 season and remain with five Super Bowl titles to their name.

Though the Cowboys are often mocked for their Super Bowl drought for three decades, many other teams across three major sports (NFL, NBA, and MLB) have similar drought cases, with the Cowboys standing at No. 14 in that list.

The Cleveland Guardians (MLB) lead the list, having last won in 1948, leading with a 78-year drought. The Sacramento Kings (NBA) trail with a 75-year drought, having won in 1951.

The Atlanta Hawks (NBA) haven't won since 1958, whereas the New York Jets (NFL) last won a Super Bowl in 1968, facing a 58-year drought.

Gurzi believes that the Cowboys still get ‘the most grief for their drought’ as no franchise with a longer drought receives as much backlash as the Cowboys, with the owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones, being the center of it.

Although the Cowboys' drought draws attention, the Knicks' ending their 53-year drought has given renewed hope to Cowboys fans as they head into the 2026 season.

Stephen A. Smith Takes Subtle Dig at Cowboys After Knicks Win

Sports Analyst and Commentator Stephen A Smith has often drawn attention for his remarks regarding the Cowboys franchise and his subtle jabs at Jerry Jones whenever he gets the opportunity.

And the Knicks' win was one such opportunity, as he once again made a subtle dig about the Cowboys' Super Bowl drought.

“Fifty-three years, fifty-three years, fifty-three years," Smith said, per his Instagram Video post. "It's finally over! For years, I've been tortured. They actually associated us with the Cowboys! It's all over. It's all over, finally! Finally!."

Paolo Mariano of Clutchpoints believes that, as Smith's favorite team, the Knicks, won the finals after a long-overdue drought, it gives Smith all the more reason to continue with his trolling of the Cowboys.

Will the Dallas Cowboys end their Super Bowl drought in the 2026 season? Let us know in the comments.
