A strong opinion has come out on Dak Prescott ahead of the 2026 NFL season, with former quarterback and analyst Steve Beuerlein saying this could be a very important year for him.
In an exclusive interview with PFSN, former Cowboys quarterback and analyst Steve Beuerlein described Dak Prescott’s 2026 season as potentially a “last best chance” moment.
“Dak should be looking at this year as, hey, this might be my last best chance to really make it happen,” Beuerlein said. “He’s got all the pieces in place now to make a deep run, and this is his chance.”

This comes from someone who knows the Cowboys organization closely. Beuerlein is a former backup quarterback for the team’s Super Bowl XXVII roster and now a national radio analyst.
While Beuerlein respects Prescott’s regular-season achievements, he pointed out that his 2-5 postseason record remains a concern.
“His history in the playoffs, he really hasn’t proven himself as a guy that can win those games,” he noted.
However, he also stressed that criticism often ignores Dallas’ defensive issues.
“The defense has been the big problem the last few years with the Cowboys,” he added, referring to their struggles in recent seasons, including the 48-32 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in January 2024.
The Cowboys have improved their roster around Dak Prescott after a 7-9-1 season, allowing over 30 points a game on average. Naturally, this raised expectations for 2026.
On offense, CeeDee Lamb remains the main target, while George Pickens had a strong season with over 1,400 receiving yards, and Javonte Williams added more than 1,200 yards on the ground.
With better support around him, Smith’s comments point to support for Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense, moving into that bigger discussion.
Smith Supports Prescott and the Cowboys' Offense
Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith shared a positive view on Dak Prescott and how the Cowboys' offense is shaping up.
In a report by DJ Siddiqi for Action Network, he supported Prescott and also talked about how a more balanced system can help the team.
“I think having Dak Prescott as a Dallas Cowboys quarterback is the best thing that the Cowboys have done since Tony Romo left,” said Smith. “I would just say to everyone that says Dak has not won the big one...the Cowboys haven’t been in the big one. He cannot win it all by himself."
Smith also pointed out that Prescott needs a better-balanced system around him to perform at his best.
“I think the system that you’re seeing with Brian Schottenheimer has a balance, It kind of has a feel for what the balance that we used to have back in my day,” he continued. “That feels good to me. It looks good...offensive team.”
Smith’s comments show Prescott plays better when the offense is balanced. A better system could take pressure off him and help the team in big moments.
The discussion around Dak Prescott shows both pressure and support, with expectations now clearly rising around him for 2026.
