During an appearance on the Ross Tucker podcast, Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith warned that the Cowboys may lose the fans' support if they fail to maximize the returns from Parsons trade.
“If we don’t, then I believe the Dallas Cowboys and the family could be losing fans for a lifetime," Smith said, per X post of Ross Tucker podcast. "Because those fans would feel like they have been taken advantage of, no one is really paying attention to them."
The Cowboys traded five-time Pro Bowler Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for two first-round picks (2026 & 2027) and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
The deal ultimately made the Cowboys gain five players, beginning with the addition of Clark. They traded Mazi Smith, a 2026 second-round and a 2027 first-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for Quinnen Williams.
The Cowboys utilized other picks during the 2026 NFL Draft, where they traded down with the Philadelphia Eagles to secure UCF Knights edge Malachi Lawrence as the No. 23 pick overall (initially No. 20).
The picks acquired in the deal were used to secure former Florida Gators cornerback Devin Moore (No.114) and Alabama’s defensive tackle LT Overton (No. 137).
So, if after all those blockbuster moves, the Cowboys still can't make good of them, then Smith believes it could affect their wallet.
"That's when you will see an effect on sales, tickets, suites, and merchandise going down, and that's the biggest way to impact a person’s pocket through your wallet," Smith added.
Stephen Jones, Vice President of the Dallas Cowboys, had previously expressed satisfaction in the results gained out of the Parsons trade, feeling that the team had the 'right pieces in the right place.'
“Ultimately, the decision we made was that one player is not worth four or five good ones, and we feel like that’s where we’re going to end up here in a good spot,” Jones said during his appearance on the ‘Mad Dog Sports’ radio show in early May.
Though the results of Parsons' trade will not be known until the 2026 season unfolds, one analyst believes that Smith's warning is far-fetched given the loyalty of the Cowboys' fan base.
Analyst Offers Different Take on Parsons Trade
Mike Moraitis of Sports Illustrated acknowledges that the Parsons trade will become one of the most controversial moves made by the Cowboys if they don't maximize the assets acquired.
But disagrees with Smith regarding the fans withdrawing their support for the team.
"After all, this is a fan base that is used to big mistakes, and chances are that, even though this one could prove to be the biggest in team history, fans will be able to shake it off as they have done with other Cowboys blunders in the past," Moraitis wrote.
Clark is returning as nose tackle, while Williams (played last 7 games in 2025) is expected to be 'a difference maker' in his second campaign with the Cowboys.
The debate regarding the returns is unlikely to be settled soon until the Cowboys' revamped defense takes the field in the 2026 season.
