The Dallas Cowboys might not stay long in the hands of the owner and general manager, Jerry Jones. Recently, Jones has floated the idea of including another investor in the franchise.

Since taking over in 1989, Jones has guided the Cowboys to three Super Bowls. But recently, the franchise's GM has hinted at the possibility of selling a portion of his stake to renowned businessman Mark Cuban.

"That’s exactly why if you’re me, you would be open to that is because of the man,” Jones told The Dallas Morning News on August 3. “I have all the respect in the world for him and I know what he did for the Mavericks and what he’s done for basketball."

Cuban was a longtime owner of the Dallas Mavericks, owning the team since 2000, before he sold his majority stake to the Adelson and Dumont families in 2023 and became a minority owner. Cuban himself also seems interesting in Jones' offer.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Cuban said, "I’m sure our Harbinger fund would be open to it."

Under his term as the owner, the Mavericks also won an NBA championship in 2011, 4-2 against the Miami Heat.

"He’s (Cuban) in addition to the financial boatstreams of your team," Jones continued. "You want to associate with the highest-quality person who loves the game and, at the same time, wants to do something about it. Mark leads the way in that."

While Jones suggested this could be a brilliant idea for the Cowboys' future, another executive at the franchise recently spoke about sharing stakes.

Co-owner speaks of potential sale amid Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones talk of acquiring a hold in the franchise

During a recent appearance on the 105.3 The Fan podcast, Cowboys co-owner and executive vice president Stephen Jones revealed he wasn't averse to the idea of the franchise selling minority stakes to a private equity group or firm.

"We wouldn’t rule it out," Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan radio on August 1. "But we’d also be very particular in who we would bring in as a partner in terms of that. But, yes, it was designed when (the NFL) passed that rule that you could have private equity involved in the NFL and you could have minority partners, you know."

The NFL passed the 2024 Resolution JC-7 on August 27, which now allows private equity firms to purchase up to 10 percent passive ownership in a franchise.

The league further approved groups like Arctos Partners, Ares Management, Sixth Street to invest in the NFL teams.

Last year, the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers shared their 10 percent share with Arctos Partners. Furthermore, Sixth Street Partners got 10 percent of the New England Patriots.

It still remains unclear whether the Cuban deal will happen anytime soon. However, the idea has received a green light from Jones himself.
