Michael Irvin Delivers Brutal Reality Check to George Pickens Over $27.3M Tag

The Dallas Cowboys locked in George Pickens on a $27.3 million franchise tag, but the Hall of Famer Michael Irvin believed the real challenge is only beginning.

Irvin gave a blunt reminder, making it clear that expectations rise as players cash in. Although Pickens became a reliable weapon for Dak Prescott last season, Dallas still avoided his long-term contract extension.

Considering Pickens' current situation, the former Cowboys WR advised Pickens to approach the opportunity differently.

“Let’s not look at this as they didn’t want to pay me money. Let’s look at this, as last year, I had a team that didn’t want to give me anything. They let me go. Right now, I got a team that is willing to say, ‘I will give you a $30 million a year deal right now,’ that’s not a bad deal," Irvin suggested, as per Heavy.com.

Irvin explained that Pickens should see his current situation as a major opportunity rather than a setback. He also blamed the media to overhyping Pickens, which eventually led to his production issues at Pittsburgh.

“When you look at where you stand and where you started—and he needed to see this. And not let those people in this microphone and the people speaking into this microphone inflate a number we never would have been able to reach,” Irvin added.

After his Steelers exit, Pickens now has a $30M offer from Dallas. What's more, he has been placed in a starring role alongside Prescott.

Pickens recorded 93 catches, 1,429 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns, proving his value in Dallas' offense last season. Dallas too has already shown strong faith in Pickens, and another elite season could lead to an even bigger long-term payday.

By avoiding a prolonged contract dispute now, the Cowboys can keep the focus on building chemistry with Prescott and improving the offense that ranked among the NFC's most productive passing attacks last season.

Cowboys Can Make Major Roster Moves Before 2026 Season

The Dallas Cowboys may not be done shaping their roster this offseason, as the front office is looking to strengthen the team even further.

Dallas is still exploring additions at linebacker, pass rusher, and running back before training camp begins, mentioned Joseph Hoyt, Dallas Morning News.

Last season, injuries exposed weaknesses across the Cowboys' defensive line, especially at linebacker and in the secondary. Adding experienced veterans would give defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus more flexibility heading into the NFC.

Thus, it is no surprise that players being considered include veterans like linebacker Jordyn Brooks and running back James Conner.

The franchise understands that maximizing Prescott's championship window will need consistent protection and a balanced offense throughout the season.

So, while the addition of Pickens and young offensive talent has brought optimism, Dallas may still approach other reliable running backs or offensive linemen.
