The Dallas Cowboys have avoided a potential quarterback dilemma before training camp, as the NFL's decision on Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has put an end to a Supplemental Draft surprise.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and league officials decided not to move forward with Sorsby's request to join the 2026 Supplemental Draft, leaving the quarterback out of the league this year.
“Quarterback Brendan Sorsby will not play in the NFL in 2026,” ESPN insiders Pete Thamel and Adam Schefter reported, adding, “the league has elected not to hold a supplemental draft.”

ESPN reported on June 23 that Sorsby has been ruled out for the 2026 NFL season. Seeing as how the last Supplemental draft happened in 2023, the possibility was always up for debate this year.
The Texas Tech quarterback became one of college football's biggest names this offseason after spending time at Indiana and Cincinnati before joining the Red Raiders on a reported one-year, around $6 million NIL deal.
The NFL's decision was tied to concerns surrounding Sorsby's eligibility case, which had become a major topic across college football. The situation also caught attention because of Dallas' quarterback depth.
Prescott remains the team's No. 1 quarterback, but he is set to turn 33 and earns $60 million per year under his current deal.
Suggestion: He missed 11 games in 2020 and another nine in 2024 because of injuries. Because of that, talk of a young quarterback prospect naturally got people talking.
Naturally, Sorsby emerged as a prospect given how Dallas will eventually need a successor.
But with the NFL ending his path to the league this year, Dallas no longer has that discussion heading into training camp.
This discussion also came from Albert Breer’s comments on the Cowboys’ quarterback situation.
Breer points to the Cowboys’ QB situation in the Sorsby discussion
Earlier this offseason, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, in response to a question from Brandon Loree, discussed the Dallas Cowboys as a possible landing spot for Brendan Sorsby in his Sports Illustrated NFL Mailbag Article.
He pointed to the team’s long-term quarterback situation with Dak Prescott as the reason behind that idea.
“There’s also the other piece of this: Dak Prescott will turn 34 next summer, has been banged up, and the time could be coming to put an heir apparent into the pipeline,” Breer wrote. “If you’re Dallas…It’s worth thinking about, anyway.”
His comments suggested that Sorsby could have been a future option for Dallas due to Prescott’s age and injury history, making it a topic worth attention at the time.
With Sorsby out for this year, the Cowboys no longer have a quarterback issue heading into training camp and can now focus on the new season and their plans.
