NFL Fans Bash Jerry Jones for Picking Michael Irvin Over Defensive Needs

The 2025 season was not that great for the Dallas Cowboys. A poor defense was one of the main reasons that cost them a place in the playoffs. Now, Jerry Jones has Cowboys fans fuming over his latest comment.

When asked which franchise icon he'd bring back to end the team's Super Bowl drought, his answer sparked immediate backlash.

"I think what Michael Irvin stood for, as far as leadership, will, was an ingredient. But we have so many players that made such a great contribution. Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders. Those guys had one thing in common," said Jerry Jones.

'Well, they were great football players, very talented. They had an inner will. So much of this game is not about the Xs and Os. It’s about what’s inside people like Michael Irvin," he added.

Michael Irvin is among the best to have played for the Dallas Cowboys. He helped them win six division titles and four consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances (1992–1995). The 5x Pro Bowler won Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX as a key offensive leader.

But the fans are angry that Jones is choosing a wide receiver instead of a defensive player. A fan said, "Evidence we won’t be winning a SB anytime in the next decade." The last time the Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl was in 1996.

Ivrin had 111 catches for 1,603 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in 16 games that season. That was the most yards on receptions for the Cowboys until CeeDee Lamb broke that record in 2023 with 1,749 yards. Though the fans are furious that Jones did not choose a defensive player.

NFL Fans Question Jerry Jones Picking Michael Irvin

One fan said, "we need prime LVE back man, he alone would've been good enough to make a push mid-season". They were talking about the legendary Cowboys' linebacker, Leighton Vander Esch.

In his rookie season alone, Esch had 102 solo tackles, 38 assists, and 2 interceptions in 16 games. He made the Pro Bowl that season, but later injuries forced him to retire at 28. "He needs to go. ****** said a whole wr. Like we don’t got 2🤧" another comment read.

The Cowboys do have two wide receivers: George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, and both are equally good. "This should show how low his football iq is… literally any HOF defender should have been the answer id say Deion," one fan commented.

Another followed the same lines, saying, "Give me Deion you get an occasional receiver, elite returner and the greatest corner, win for offense, defense and special teams". Deion Sanders is a 2011 Hall of Famer, and he has had an all-around impact.

Sanders had 34 solo tackles, 4 assists, 1.0 sack, 13 fumble recoveries, and 53 interceptions. He also returned 212 punts for 3,523 yards in his career, caught 60 catches for 784 yards, and scored 3 TDs. Would you have taken him over Michael Irvin if you were in Jerry Jones spot?
