"Taylor shared the news on his personal social media, celebrating the moment with longtime teammate George Kittle," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Taylor's retirement via an X post.
Trent was a 2017 fifth-round pick (No. 177) by the San Francisco 49ers, after playing for Louisiana Tech during his collegiate years.
He played for the Niners for four seasons before playing with the Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears, primarily as a punt returner.
Over his seven-season NFL career, Taylor appeared in 80 games, recording 88 receptions for 845 yards and three touchdowns. He was also a major contributor on special teams, racking up 1,051 yards on 112 punt returns for a solid 9.4-yard average.
He appeared in two games in 2024 during his second stint with the 49ers, marking his final season in the league before signing a reserve/future contract with the team in January 2025.
He was later placed on injured reserve due to an injury, sidelining him for the 2025 season.
As Taylor officially closed the chapter on his playing career, fans took to social media to celebrate his career and well-wishes for Taylor's next chapter.
Taylor’s retirement earns heartfelt reactions from fans
Following Adam Schefter's report of Taylor's retirement on X, fans quickly expressed their appreciation for the wide receiver's contributions over his seven NFL seasons.
One fan noted that lasting seven seasons is a major achievement, especially considering the average NFL career spans just 3.3 years.
"Seven years in the NFL is something most players never reach. Respect," one fan wrote.
Another fan commented about Kittle's close friendship with Taylor, suggesting that the Niners TE would have celebrated the occasion in his own unique way.
"George Kittle probably turned the retirement post into a full comedy kit," another fan commented.
One fan remembered Taylor's two-point conversion (against the Kansas City Chiefs) after catching a pass from Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, which led the team to a Super Bowl appearance for the first time since 1988.
"Will never forget that 2-point conversion he had for the Bengals in the 2021 AFC Championship game," one fan wrote.
One fan joked that retirement could give Taylor a chance to finally beat Kittle at karaoke.
"Congrats on trading the gold helmet for a couch, now you can finally out-sing Kittle at karaoke," one fan commented.
Another fan pointed out the close bond between Kittle and the former wideout, as both were 2017 fifth-round picks of the 49ers.
"Kittle must be fuming losing 1 of his best mates," another fan wrote.
