Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys make a smart move on restricted free agent kicker Brandon Aubrey.
As per Adam Schefter, Jones and the Cowboys have placed a second-round tender worth $5.76 million on Aubrey. Aubrey is one of the most accurate kickers in recent times, and now other teams can sway the kicker away from AT&T Stadium.
The second-round tender protects the Cowboys in two potential scenarios. Now, there is a possibility that teams come in for Aubrey and offer him a contract. The Cowboys will still have the right to match that contract and retain Aubrey.
If the Cowboys don't match an offer, they will receive a second-round draft pick in exchange for Aubrey.
For now, there are negotiations underway between Aubrey and the Cowboys. General manager Jerry Jones has openly admitted that he wants to make Aubrey the highest-paid player in the NFL for that position.
Jones said, “We want to make him the highest-paid player.” Currently, there is an offer on the table for Aubrey. However, the two sides may not be on the same page regarding salary.
The Move Has Drawn Mixed Reactions From the NFL World
Some fans are calling it a smart move by Jones and the Cowboys, referring to the situation as a “win/win.”
In the 2025 season, Aubrey had a field goal percentage of close to 86% and a season-long of 64 yards. Aubrey's future remains a key storyline heading into free agency.
One user said, "Honestly, a smart move by the Dallas Cowboys. Either they keep one of the most reliable kickers in the league, Brandon Aubrey, or they walk away with a second-round pick. That’s solid business.”
A Green Bay Packers fan commented, “BRING HIM TO THE PACKERS ILL DO ANYTHING.” The Packers do need a better kicker. He ranked 22nd in the league, making only 24 field goals, while Aubrey is ranked fourth with 36 field goals. And if the Packers snap him up, it can help Dallas in another way.
One user said, “I would take the second-round pick. That defense needs all the help they can get!” referring to the poor defense they had in 2025. Jerry Jones already promised to spend in free agency, but the draft is also a solid option to have.
One fan is disappointed with the Cowboys and Jones, “The Cowboys are once again playing hardball with a star who saved their season multiple times.” (clown emoji).
There is still no indication where Aubrey will play, but this is a hot topic going into free agency.
