NFL Legend Weighs In on Dallas Cowboys Move That Is Unlike Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones has created a new buzzword for the Cowboys' offseason – he is going to “bust the budget” to secure the key players he needs to bolster his defense.

This move is quite unlike the Jerry Jones we know, who has been conservative over the years in signing free agents.

In 2024, when Jones promised to go “all-in”, he ended up spending one of the least in the league ($23.4 million), while others like the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks spent $192.9 million and $101.5 million, respectively.

While fans are skeptical, a former Cowboys legend has spoken up in favor of Jerry Jones. Dez Bryant, former wide receiver for the Cowboys, said on a post on X that he is seeing a shift in Jones’ mentality.

“Unlike the Dallas Cowboys started after Micah got traded, and I don’t mean that in the way most of the negative people would like to read it. Great for Micah because he got paid, and great for the Cowboys because of the way they bounced back after the trade”, he wrote on X.

Dallas traded one of their most important players, Micah Parsons, to the Green Bay Packers ahead of the last season. His absence did affect the Cowboys, as their defensive unit turned out to be one of the league's worst.

Dez Bryant’s comments came on a video where ESPN’s Peter Schrager was speaking in support of Jones. Schrager thought that the Cowboys looked ready to spend this offseason.

"They've got the money, they've got the needs, and they have the desire and will with Jerry now, another offseason into his career, I expect Dallas to be big players and putting up those Louis Vuitton, Giorgio Armani prices in free agency,” Schrager said.

Interestingly, they have already started making moves.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are off to a busy offseason

The Cowboys' offseason has been quite busy, with multiple discussions ongoing about key players.

Most notably, the Cowboys have signed running back Javonte Williams to a three-year, $24 million contract. They have also placed the franchise tag on star wide receiver George Pickens.

Talks are also ongoing with kicker Brandon Aubrey, who is seeking the highest-paid kicker contract, which is around $10 million.

For the Cowboys to have enough cap space to play with in free agency, they will have to restructure some key contracts, including those of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Tyler Smith.

Speaking on this situation, Jones had said, "We'll make the adjustments that you'd think we'd make and spread that out so we can get the players that we want to get, or that we'd like to get."

Do you think that Jerry Jones is going to stay true to his word and “bust the budget” this offseason? Let us know in the comments.
