The Dallas pass rusher, Rashan Gary, has become one of the league's most intriguing defensive stars. Yet despite his success, a recent discussion offered a blunt reminder that talent is not always everything.
To fix their leaky defense, Rashan Gary was signed with a huge $32 million contract restructured deal by the Dallas Cowboys. But Mike Fisher, an analyst, argued that the label should be reserved for a few players whose dominance is undeniable from the start.
"If he goes and gets you 10 sacks and all you gave up for him was what, a fourth-round pick, good for you," said Fisher on the Mike Fisher podcast. "But there's still moves to be made. Rashan Gary is not a generational talent. He's not Myles Garrett, obviously."

Generational talents are players who immediately separate themselves from other players through rare production.
Players like Trey Hendrickson consistently managed 17.5 sacks across 2023 and 2024, while Garrett broke the all-time NFL record for most sacks in a season with 23 last year. Compared to that, Gary has yet to have 10 or more sacks in an NFL season.
The comment was not aimed at dismissing Gary's abilities but at defining the high standard attached. In fact, Gary has been consistent in production with six or more sacks a season since 2021.
Since being selected 12th overall by the Packers in 2019, he has grown into one of the team's most impactful defenders. In fact, Gary is the most advanced edge rusher the Cowboys have, as per ESPN's Todd Archer.
Therefore, he is entering Dallas with the same energy and the same mentality.
Rashan Gary's Arrival Gives Cowboys Rookie Malachi Lawrence the Perfect Launchpad
The Cowboys may not have a star pass rusher in Micah Parsons anymore, but their renewed edge group can be effective through depth and development. Malachi Lawrence and Rashan Gary's pairing is the reason behind that confidence.
Christian Parker, the new defensive coordinator, is building a defense that depends on multiple players rather than a single star. This strategy adds importance to veterans like Gary, as per ESPN.
The Cowboys want Lawrence to play alongside Gary and second-year pass rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku, leading to a more versatile pass-rush unit.
The franchise believes Lawrence can develop quickly under Gary without having to carry the burden of primary defense playmaker from Day 1. Under Parker's training, the duo can help the unit bounce back in 2026.
