"Only thing that stopped us"- Frustrated Dak Prescott looks back at Cowboys' loss to Ravens in Brazil

The Dallas Cowboys were inches away from stealing the win in Brazil. With 28 seconds left and the ball at the Ravens’ 22-yard line, a pass interference penalty on Nate Wiggins gave Dallas first-and-goal from the 2-yard line.

A goal-line pass toward George Pickens fell incomplete before Luke Schoonmaker was flagged for a false start. Dak Prescott then scrambled for two yards and threw the ball away on third down, leaving Brandon Aubrey to make a 23-yard field goal with seven seconds left.

“I thought we were going to score,” Prescott said after the pass interference call. “Still think we were going to score, we just got in our own way. That's the only thing that stopped us tonight.”

Dallas had tied the game and appeared headed for overtime. Instead, Lamar Jackson connected with Zay Flowers for 27 yards, putting Baltimore in position for Tyler Loop’s 56-yard game-winning field goal.

“Frustrated,” Prescott said, according to Dallascowboys.com. “Frustrated as hell. Excuse me. Embarrassed.”

Prescott finished 25-of-40 for 276 yards and a touchdown, while adding 19 rushing yards. The Cowboys also had to settle for three points after reaching deep into Baltimore territory on their opening drive.

“That was the last chance that we had the ball in our hands, it was a chance to win the game,” he said. “That's the National Football League. Everything up to that point doesn't matter.”

Now 1-2, Dallas has little time to dwell on the loss. The Cowboys return home before heading back on the road to face the 0-3 Houston Texans next Sunday.

Prescott wasn’t alone in questioning what went wrong. Michael Irvin also zeroed in on the Cowboys’ final possession after the heartbreaking loss.

Did the Cowboys miss their biggest chance against the Ravens?

The Dallas Cowboys had the Ravens on the ropes late in Brazil, but they couldn’t finish the job. Dallas reached Baltimore’s 2-yard line with 23 seconds left and had a chance to take the lead, only to settle for a field goal before Tyler Loop won it for the Ravens moments later.

Michael Irvin was particularly frustrated with how the Cowboys handled those final moments. Speaking on ESPN First Take, the Cowboys legend pointed to the offense after Dallas struggled to turn its final opportunity into a touchdown.

“I’m way more disappointed in the offense, because first of all, the offense started slowly. And then, ending this poorly, it’s the worst thing of all,” Irvin said, according to PennLive.

The play that bothered him most came on third-and-goal from the 5. Prescott appeared to have George Pickens near the pylon, but the pass sailed over the receiver as Dallas settled for Brandon Aubrey’s field goal.

“How do you miss George Pickens on a third down, game’s on the line?” Irvin said. “How in the hell are we having a miscommunication at this point in the game, when we both know the game’s on the line?”

Dallas then kicked the ball through the end zone with seven seconds left, giving Baltimore possession at its own 35 with no time coming off the clock.

The Ravens took advantage, with Lamar Jackson finding Zay Flowers for 27 yards before Loop hit the winning 56-yard field goal.
