With NFL preseason Week 1 in the books, several quarterbacks made the most of their limited snaps, with backups and young QBs making strong early impressions.

This ranking compiles reports and evaluations from multiple NFL and team sources, with passing efficiency, production, touchdowns and overall impact used to determine the 10 quarterbacks who made the strongest impression in Week 1.

1. Drew Allar

Allar delivered the most complete performance of the group, completing 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score. The Steelers rookie’s combination of efficiency and three total touchdowns gives him the edge for the top spot.

Drew Allar marked a stellar debut against the Green Bay Packers (28-9) on August 13, according to John Breech and Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports.

2. Ty Simpson

The Los Angeles Rams rookie Ty Simpson was arguably the most efficient passer on the list, completing 21 of 25 attempts for 190 yards and two touchdowns. However, Allar’s additional rushing score gives the Steelers rookie the slight edge at No. 1.

He has a 125.0 passer rating in a 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason Week 1, according to NFL.com wire reports.

3. Sam Howell

The Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback made his biggest impact with a 39-yard touchdown pass to undrafted rookie Camden Brown, helping put Dallas ahead of Seattle.

That big-play production gives Howell the edge over the quarterbacks below him and earns him the No. 3 spot, according to K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire.

4. Gardner Minshew

The Arizona Cardinals’ backup QB Gardner Minshew was the headliner, as he led the team to a 27-14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, completing 14 of 16 throws for 101 yards and two touchdowns, according to John Breech and Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports.

5. Anthony Richardson

Backup QB Anthony Richardson impressed in the Indianapolis Colts’ 13-13 preseason tie against the New England Patriots. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards while adding 53 rushing yards and a touchdown, according to JJ Stankevitz of Colts.com.

6. Josh Allen

Allen led the Buffalo Bills to a 29-14 preseason win over the Carolina Panthers, completing 6-of-8 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown with zero interceptions in just two drives, according to Buffalo Toronto Public Media on August 15.

7. Deshaun Watson

Deshaun Watson made a stronger statistical impression than Shedeur Sanders in the Browns’ 34-10 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears. Watson completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards, while Sanders finished 6 of 11 for 79 yards and an interception, according to Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports.

8. Justin Fields

Fields didn’t produce a touchdown, but he was perfect through the air, completing all four of his attempts for 41 yards while adding nine rushing yards.

His mistake-free showing was enough to put him ahead of the other limited-sample performances on this list, according to Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star.

9. Jaxson Dart

The New York Giants QB Jaxson Dart finished the preseason opener 3-of-4 for 26 yards and a touchdown in a 24-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

He briefly exited for a concussion evaluation after taking a hard sack but quickly returned and threw a 15-yard touchdown to wide receiver Malachi Fields, according to Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News.

10. Cam Ward

Cam Ward completed 5 of 12 passes for 57 yards in Tennessee’s 19-13 preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers, while first-round receiver Carnell Tate went without a catch, according to Jim Wyatt of TennesseeTitans.com.

Ward helped the Titans open the game with a 95-yard touchdown drive, giving him enough impact to land at No. 10.

Week 1 produced several impressive quarterback performances, with Allar and Simpson standing out at the top of the list.

With more preseason action still to come, the order could change, but these 10 quarterbacks made the strongest impressions in the opening week.
