San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch shared a fresh update on Kyle Shanahan's recovery, and NFL fans were quick to show their support.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, July 25, 2026, in Santa Clara, Lynch revealed Shanahan is recovering well but still dealing with concussion symptoms. He added that Shanahan will have limited duties as training camp begins.
"Kyle basically is going to be like in the protocol," Lynch said. "And we're going to let the doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back. He's been in the building, so we've seen him. It's kind of like we do with our players, a phased back approach. Number one for Kyle and the Shanahan family is getting him back right."

As shared by the San Francisco 49ers in a video, the update came nearly two weeks after Shanahan was injured in a car crash near his Northern California home on July 14. Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, and his hand, received more than 40 stitches on his face, and also suffered a severe concussion.
Most people begin to feel better within one to two weeks after the injury, with recovery typically taking about 10 days.
However, authorities later confirmed that d**** and a****** were not involved in the crash, and no citations were issued.
Despite the setback, Shanahan is entering his 10th season as the 49ers' head coach. He has an 82-67 regular-season record and helped the team reach two NFC Championship titles.
According to Lynch, the 49ers will continue to monitor Shanahan's recovery and slowly increase his workload as his concussion symptoms improve. His return to full-time coaching will depend on medical clearance.
This is not the first time that San Francisco will be without a head coach. Back in November 2012, then-San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was hospitalized for a minor procedure after doctors detected an irregular heartbeat.
Until Shanahan returns to his full role, assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the rest of the coaching staff will share his responsibilities.
For now, the focus remains on Shanahan's full recovery, while many NFL fans continue to wish him a speedy return.
NFL fans react to John Lynch’s update on Kyle Shanahan
John Lynch's update on Shanahan's recovery quickly drew reactions online, with many NFL fans sharing their thoughts after Adam Schefter's X post about the injury update.
"40 stitches, broken ribs, broken hand and this man still walked into the building to run camp. respect the dawg in him, but somebody needs to make him sit down before week 1 rolls around," one fan wrote.
The comment praised Shanahan's dedication but urged him to focus on his recovery before returning to full duties.
"If it happened on July 14th, why are we just hearing about it now?" another fan asked.
The reaction questioned why details of the crash became public nearly two weeks later.
"Dam hope he recovers soon wishing him a speedy recovery most of all his head injury," one user commented.
The comment showed support for Shanahan and noted how serious his injuries were.
"Scary to even read. Wishing Kyle Shanahan a full recovery and an easy road back. Football can wait. Grateful he's okay," another fan wrote.
The message wished Shanahan a full recovery and said his health should come before football as the pressure grows to be back before Rams' opening game against Los Angeles Rams on September 10.
"Wishing him a fast recovery, this is sad regardless of how the season shakes out from here," one fan added.
For now, fans are hoping to see Shanahan recover fully before he returns to his coaching duties.
