Alex Freeman, son of Super Bowl champion Antonio Freeman, made headlines after scoring his first FIFA World Cup goal to help the USA reach the knockout stage.
The 21-year-old defender scored in the match against Australia on Friday. The goal marked a breakthrough moment for Freeman on the international stage and proved decisive in helping the United States secure its place in the knockout rounds. It became one of the biggest moments of the young defender's career so far.
"It's a full circle family moment," Alex Freeman said after the win. “It shows how great the family tree is. It shows he can be great, but I can be great in my own way, and how amazing it is to have a dad that is successful and can mentor me to be ready for moments like these."

He had a notable performance in 1996 against the Seattle Seahawks, scoring two touchdowns, and later won Super Bowl XXXI with the team.
Decades later, his son Alex Freeman represents the United States in soccer and recently scored in the FIFA World Cup to help the team reach the knockout stage.
Alex Freeman slowly grew his career at the club level before making it to the international stage, starting with Orlando City and becoming a regular part of the senior team as a young player.
In the 2025 season, he became a regular starter and played 29 matches, spending around 2,453 minutes on the pitch. During this time, he scored six goals and gave three assists, making it his best season so far.
Overall, for Orlando City, he has made 32 appearances across MLS seasons, contributing six goals and four assists in total.
Later, he moved to Villarreal in Spain for the 2025–26 season. There, he has played nine matches so far in La Liga, with three starts and around 346 minutes of playing time, as he continues to adjust to a higher level of competition.
These numbers show that he is still a young player growing his game, but he is already gaining valuable experience across MLS and European football.
This is also seen in the US squad, with Folarin Balogun actively supporting Freeman ahead of the knockout stage.
Freeman's Goal Gives USA Momentum Entering Knockout Stage
Alex Freeman’s first World Cup goal also drew appreciation from teammates, with US striker Folarin Balogun calling him a grounded and hardworking player.
With the United States advancing to the knockout rounds, Freeman's goal has increased attention on the young defender and the role he could play as the competition intensifies.
“I’m so happy for Freeman,” Balogun told Fox Sports. “He’s such a humble kid. He’s so down to earth. For him to get his first World Cup goal, you know, on home soil, I’m sure it’s a special evening for him.”
With the United States now through to the knockout stage, Freeman's breakthrough goal could prove to be one of the defining moments of his young international career as the tournament enters its most demanding phase.
