It has already been a historic journey for the Dallas Cowboys rookie. His second NFL preseason game gave him another moment he will not soon forget after the Cowboys' 34-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals on August 22.

Shiyazh Pete received a warm reception from Navajo fans in Arizona before delivering an emotional speech to his teammates after the victory. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer later praised the undrafted rookie for his viral locker room speech.

“This game, fate, brought us here as strangers, but this game, this star, this team will make us brothers,” Pete told his teammates, drawing a loud reaction from the locker room.

Pete, who became the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team when Dallas added him after the 2026 draft, played six snaps on Saturday. The Kentucky product did not allow a pressure and helped block for Phil Mafah's late touchdown.

A sizable group of Navajo supporters at State Farm Stadium also greeted the 6-foot-9 offensive lineman. Fans wearing both Cowboys and Cardinals jerseys stood and applauded when Pete entered the game.

“Well, that was an incredible win,” Pete said via X (@dallascowboys). “I am very fortunate to be amongst you and to play on the same field, wear the same star, hold it on our chest, and I'm proud of us. Proud of how far we've come.”

His postgame speech also caught the attention of the Cowboys' head coach.

Schottenheimer said he did not expect Pete's postgame comments to become such a major moment. Still, he believed the rookie captured what football can mean inside a locker room.

"It's a storyline where you have a guy who's fighting his b*** off trying to make the team, but when you give him an opportunity, deservedly so, to address the group, it was very raw. It was very authentic," Schottenheimer told reporters on August 25 via Dallas YouTube

Pete is still fighting for his place in Dallas. Pete's future on the 53-man roster remains uncertain, with Dallas carrying significant competition along the offensive line.

Still, his performance in Arizona gave the Cowboys another look at a rookie whose story has already made an impression.

Schottenheimer also said the players' reaction made the moment even more memorable.

The Cowboys will now return to North Texas, where fans can see Pete and the rest of the roster during open practices at The Star. Dallas then closes its preseason schedule against the New Orleans Saints on August 28.
