Following Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's star-studded wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 3, 2026, Tony Romo’s past broadcast blunders have taken on a whole new meaning.

Back in December 2023, Romo accidentally referred to Swift as Kelce’s wife twice on live television. The first slip-up, according to reports of USA Today, happened during a game against the Buffalo Bills when the cameras panned to Swift.

"As you see, Kelce's wife, Taylor Swift, is in the audience," Romo said, before quickly correcting himself, "Or I'm sorry, girlfriend."

Just two weeks later, during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Kelce caught his 900th career reception, prompting Romo to repeat the same slip of tongue.

"His wife loves it," Romo announced to millions of viewers. "I mean, girlfriend," according to Jack McKessy of USA Today.

Romo didn't stop there. Weeks later, during a playoff game, he jokingly referred to Travis's brother, Jason Kelce, as Swift's "brother-in-law." Romo later admitted in a SiriusXM interview that he did it on purpose to play with fans a little bit.

What started as a joke to tease passionate Swifties turned into reality. Romo’s prophetic comments seemingly secured him a spot on the ultra-exclusive guest list, as per reports from USA Today.

He was spotted at the venue alongside other high-profile celebrities to witness the couple officially tie the knot. In hindsight, Romo's lighthearted comments now look far more fitting than they did at the time.

Tony Romo explains the reason for jokingly referring to Swift as Kelce’s wife

Taylor and Travis started dating in the summer of 2023. It all began when Travis tried to give Taylor a friendship bracelet with his phone number at her concert, but he failed. Since then, Taylor has gone to many games to cheer him on, including the 2024 Super Bowl, where Travis's team won.

Some football fans got annoyed by how much the cameras showed Taylor during games. However, Romo thinks it is great for the sport and adds a lot of excitement.

Romo later explained that those comments were intentional jokes rather than genuine slip-ups. Reports from Pete Grathoff of The Star,  Romo mentioned that the same thing had happened to him years ago.

"Someone did that to me back in the day, and they’re like, 'And there’s your wife. Oh, I mean, your girlfriend," he shared. "So sometimes the humor doesn’t go over as well."

Back when he was playing football, he dated pop singer Jessica Simpson. During a game, a TV announcer accidentally called Jessica his wife instead of his girlfriend.

What began as a callback to an old broadcasting mistake has now become one of Romo's most memorable NFL commentary moments, especially after Swift and Kelce officially tied the knot.
