Troy Aikman just made his feelings about the Dallas Cowboys crystal clear. During a recent podcast, the Hall of Fame quarterback revealed his thoughts on becoming a general manager. He also explained why the Cowboys never made the call.
In his recent conversation on DLLS Cowboys podcast, Aikman was asked whether or not he wishes he could have a consultant-type role with his former team, and his answer felt like an arrow to the heart for the fans.
“I won't be a general manager in the NFL, but with that said, I'll always wonder what kind of general manager I would have been,” Aikman revealed.
Aikman further stated that he believes he'd have been a good one, but everyone thinks they'd be good at something that they never try.
“I think the (Miami) Dolphins were wise in understanding my relationships around the league, and knowing that I have information that they don't have, or can't get," Aikman further stated. "I think they were smart in taking advantage of that, whether it was through me or through somebody else. The Cowboys have never elected to do that.”
The legend highlighted that the Cowboys had never had such a conversation with him in the past and that it may not happen in the future either.
Cowboys fans have long hoped Aikman would join the franchise in an influential role.
However, their dreams appear to remain just that, as earlier this January, Aikman signed with the Miami Dolphins to become part of key front-office decisions.
Aikman saw clear advantages in the move to Miami.
Inside Troy Aikman’s Bold Move to the Dolphins
Under Aikman's advice, the Dolphins hired Jon-Eric Sullivan as a general manager and Jeff Hafley as the head coach.
Sullivan was a longtime executive with the Green Bay Packers, while Hafley previously served as a defensive coordinator.
Their inclusion brings more depth to the Miami team.
“I will say I’m going for the Dolphins because now I have something at stake (having helped to hire new personnel),” Aikman also said in the video. “I think they hired two really talented, wonderful people...Twenty-six is going to be a tough season because of the cap when they let Tua [Tagovailoa] go, but I want to see them do well.”
It remains to be seen whether Aikman can succeed in Miami, but the way things are going, it appears to be smooth.
The Cowboys fans, however, will have to make their peace with what could have been, despite Aikman thinking he'd have been a good general manager.
