The Dallas Cowboys came away from Saturday's 34-13 preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals with another victory and, for the most part, a manageable injury report. Several players also returned to action after missing the preseason opener.
After the game against the Cardinals, Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com reported that Safety Julius Wood was the only known player forced out of the game. The second-year defender was evaluated for a concussion and later ruled out.
“Julius Wood (concussion) is ruled out of this game by the Cowboys,” Julius Wood’s X post read on August 23.
Wood had been making a strong case for a roster spot before leaving the contest. He started at safety and recorded four tackles and two run stops, as per Pro Football Focus.
The 24-year-old also posted a 73.3 overall defensive grade and an 86.5 tackling grade. With a crowded safety room, Wood's health and availability over the next week could factor into his push for a place on the final 53-man roster.
Linebacker Curtis Robinson was another player who briefly caused concern. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Robinson was attended to by trainers but eventually got up and jogged off the field.
“Cowboys LB Curtis Robinson was down but popped up and jogged off after being looked at by the training staff. Looks to be OK,” Harris wrote.
Robinson finished with one tackle and earned his best mark in run defense, posting a 74.0 grade in that category.
In training camp, the Cowboys have faced injuries but maintained depth at key positions, which is great news.
Several Cowboys returned against Arizona
Dallas also welcomed back several players who missed the preseason opener because of injuries.
According to a report by Mike Moraitis of Sports Illustrated, linebacker Jaishawn Barham and defensive backs Devin Moore and Zion Childress all returned to the field.
Barham made an immediate impression in his preseason debut. The rookie recorded five tackles, including one for loss, along with three run stops and a pressure.
Running backs Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah and Israel Abanikanda were also available after dealing with issues following the opener.
Not everyone was ready to return, however. Defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard has now missed both preseason games and remains sidelined, while tight ends Michael Trigg and DJ Rogers were inactive because of injuries.
Trigg was injured in the preseason opener, although head coach Brian Schottenheimer said during the week that there was no concern about the tight end's toe injury. Rogers suffered his injury during practice.
The Cowboys now turn their attention to their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints on August 29.
After opening the exhibition schedule with two wins, Dallas will hope to get through one more game without adding any significant injuries.
