"We could have had a Super Bowl"- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gets honest about Dak Prescott's contribution through the years

The Dallas Cowboys have spent three decades searching for another Super Bowl, and Dak Prescott has been their longest-tenured answer at quarterback. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes Dallas has had real opportunities to end that drought during Prescott's time with the team.

Jones spoke to reporters on Tuesday about Prescott's upcoming 11th season in Dallas and the difficulty of reaching the Super Bowl.

"Well, I would look back and see some of the opportunities that I thought, but for, we could have had a Super Bowl with Dak," Jones said. "We all know that it's far away when it's over, and you're not there."

Prescott has spent his entire career in Dallas after the Cowboys selected him 135th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He's now the franchise's leading passer, with 35,989 yards and 243 touchdowns through 10 regular seasons.

After speaking to the reporters on August 18 via Cowboys YouTube, Jones also pointed to Dallas' overall record during Prescott's tenure. The Cowboys have won either the sixth- or seventh-most games in the NFL since he became their quarterback.

“The bottom line is that we’ve won games; we just need to win the right games. I know this; I think [Prescott] is very capable of taking us all the way,” Jones concluded.

That has been the issue for Dallas. Prescott is 2-5 in seven playoff games and has never led the Cowboys to a conference championship game, despite consistently strong regular-season production.

The Cowboys have made changes around him this offseason, particularly on defense. A revamped unit could give Prescott more support after Dallas struggled badly on that side of the ball in 2025.

Dak Prescott continues to get respect around the NFL

Prescott's individual numbers remained strong last season. He played all 17 games, threw for 4,552 yards and finished with 30 touchdown passes, with his yardage total ranking third in the NFL.

His peers also voted him into the NFL Top 100 for the seventh time. Bobby Kownack of NFL.com ranked Prescott No. 31 on the list, while the league pointed to his production despite the Cowboys' struggles.

"He led the NFL in completions for a second time in 2025 and has quarterbacked a top-seven scoring offense in four of the past five seasons, the outlier being a year he missed nine games,” Kownack wrote.

The numbers have never been the biggest question surrounding Prescott. Getting Dallas to the final game is what Jones and the Cowboys still need from him.

For now, Jones remains convinced Prescott can do it. The next opportunity comes in a season where Dallas has rebuilt much of the defense around him.
