Will Grier, the Cowboys quarterback, returns to his old team, the Carolina Panthers, as a free agent, after a brief stint with the Cowboys.

He was in the backup lineup to quarterback Dak Prescott, but was planned to be let go by the team in March, with Jim MiIlton and Sam Howell on board.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Grier is signing to return to the Carolina Panthers.

"As the draft draws closer and teams fill out their rosters, Cowboys QB Will Grier is signing with Carolina, where he started his NFL career in 2019," Schefter wrote on X. "Grier now will join a quarterback room that includes Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett."

Grier was a third-round pick for the Carolina Panthers in the 2019 NFL draft.

He was signed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2021 as a third-string quarterback before being waived again in 2023. He had brief stints in the Cincinnati Bengals, New England  Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles.

He completed 28 passes of 52 attempted (53.8%) for 228 yards with four interceptions, in a two-game stint with the Carolina Panthers in 2019.

Grier was released as part of roster cuts, but signed to the practice squad the next day in 2025, and was later released by the Cowboys in March 2026. He is signed up with the Panthers on the prospect of being a QB3.

Will Grier Eyes Fresh Start in Carolina Panthers QB Room

Will Grier enters the Carolina Panthers’ QB room as a third quarterback to starter Bryce Young and backup Kenny Pickett.

Kenny Pickett was signed this offseason as a backup to Bryce Young, and since then, the Panthers have been looking for QB3, considering other draft prospects as well.

With most of the players like Vanderbilt Commodores QB Diego Pavia, Texas Tech QB Behren Morton, and Georgia Tech Haynes King being on the list of future backups, bringing in Grier is like a homecoming.

According to Zach Roberts of Si.com, drafting Pavia for the position of QB3 could be interesting, as both Grier and Pavia could compete for the role.

Despite Grier having more experience as a QB backup and more years in the league, his production has yet to reflect that of a veteran.
