Marcus Spears has been married to Aiysha Spears for nearly two decades, and the former Cowboys defensive end believes choosing the right partner can have a major impact on how life unfolds.
“It's all about the woman. I'm trying to, you know, I'm disseminating a message throughout the diaspora. You better marry right,” Marcus Spears said on 26 August.
Spears met his wife, Aiysha, while they were both students and athletes at LSU. She played basketball, while Marcus was part of the football team. What started as a friendship eventually turned into a marriage that has now lasted nearly 20 years.

The couple now has three children: Macaria “Cari” Spears, Marcus Spears Jr. and Miko Spears. Their daughters play volleyball, while their son has followed his mother's path into basketball.
“If you marry wrong, s*** can go real left. Okay. But if you marry right, some really good things can happen for you. Things can go way right,” Marcus Spears said on NFL on ESPN on 26 August.
Nearly two decades into their marriage, Spears and Aiysha have built a family where sports remain a major part of life, but not the only thing that matters.
Marcus and Aiysha Spears are building more than an athletic family
Sports run deep in the Spears household, but Marcus and Aiysha have made a point of not letting it define everything. Aiysha went seventh overall to the Washington Mystics, and Marcus was a 20th overall pick by the Cowboys back in 2005.
Their kids have followed right along that path. Son Marcus Jr. stands 6-foot-8, plays for Dynamic Prep and has already suited up for USA Basketball, while daughter Kari has represented USA Volleyball at the U19 level.
None of that changes what Marcus and Aiysha expect at home, though. Talking to WFAA.com in 2025, he laid out how the family keeps things normal despite everything the kids have accomplished.
"We gonna keep the values, the values," Aiysha said. "Trash has to go out. Gotta get it, get it out there. The dishes are dirty? We gotta get those dishes clean, clean your room."
That same energy shows up on the sidelines too, where Marcus isn't exactly the quiet type.
"I'm loud, voice be gone," he said, laughing about how he cheers not just for his own kids but for their teammates as well.
The Spears household has plenty of athletic ambition, but Marcus and Aiysha have made sure their children understand that success doesn't mean leaving the basics behind.
Their approach combines a passion for sports with the everyday values that have kept their family grounded.
